DS is horribly constipated. As of last night, he hadn't gone in three days. He was crying and you could see all of his little torso muscles tense up. We gave him a suppository, he took a nap, then literally laid in my arms from 3:30 to 5 when he was finally able to poop. And man was it large - think the two pieces, put together the size of a cd player. So I think, for the moment, problem solved. DS runs off to play and I am completely worn out. I told DH I don't know how parents survive children's real illnesses because I was left completely drained from this relatively minor issue.

This morning, he wakes up, and it starts all over again. Luckily, yesterday I made an appointment with the ped. yesterday so just went this morning. Because of previous medical issues, the ped. has referred us to a gastro-int. specialist. We go tomorrow. I feel awful because I really felt like I wasn't pushing him to potty train for exactly this reason (DH and I even had some "discussions" on this issue) and now I feel like I failed. It was/is so horrible to hear him crying in pain. Not so much looking for advice as kind of needing to get this off my chest, although if anyone has miracle cures, I'm all ears.

Thanks for listening,

If you think that the poop withholding is from potty training then I would just completely back away from it. Put away the potty and forget about it. He's still quite young to train and its much easier when they are closer to 3 and have so much better verbal skills.

But hugs! I think every mama knows that awful sense of guilt!

Oh bless you, it's just awful isn't it. Emily suffers from constipation and it's heart wrenching to watch her tryiing to go and crying with the pain. Our doc has just told me to give milk of magnesia. I've been giving it to her and it's helping of course but now I'm worried that she'll only be able to pooh with the help of a laxative.
I'll be interested to hear what your specialist says. Hope it gets better.
