I was looking at the Uno backless booster for my nearly 3.5 year old dd. She is about 37lbs, 41 inches tall. I wouldn't use it as her main seat, but we will be traveling in the near future, and thought it might be useful on our trip, and then left in our car for the occasional extra youngster. I don't want to spend more than around 50 since I am hoping to get a harnessed seat that goes over 40 lbs in the near future.

Any thoughts on that or another backless booster, or should I go for something like the Britax laptop?

My son started using a backless booster at 3 1/2. It is not really ideal - I think that most kids really still need more positioning than a backless booster affords. But as a spare seat, or for travel, it is probably just fine. The only danger is that your child may decide she prefers the booster to the 5 point seat - that's what happened with mine!
