View Full Version : outgrowing a Roundabout at 2 1/2 -- now what?

My son is 2 1/2, 90th percentile for height and weight, and currently about 37 1/2 inches and 37 lbs. He's particularly long-torsoed, and his shoulders are about to pass the top harness slot on his Roundabout.

I got him to sit still in a Marathon for about two seconds, and his shoulders seemed awfully close to the top harness slot. I'm concerned that he'll outgrow the Marathon before he's ready for a booster! The measurements I found show the Marathon's top slot being 2.5 inches higher than the Roundabouts. Is that right? He's got at least a year and a half until he's ready for a booster -- will 2.5 inches get me there? Or does his torso height make him a prime candidate for a Husky?

Fortunately, at this age, those little legs start getting longer, and the torso growth slows down, so you really will probably get quite a bit longer in the MA than you think you will...at least to age 4.5...I have still yet to hear about a child too tall for the MA younger than 6 (I KNOW that sounds wild, trust me! I know when you put him in there and it barely looks like there's any growing room, that you can't imagine it!) http://www.geocities.com/protectwhatulove/6_year_old_in_MA.html (this isn't my son, though that's what my son's size and age is, and how he fits in it, too) and another one (again, not my kid...this boy is MUCH bigger than my son) http://pages.ivillage.com/momika/carseatphotos/id24.html

Anyway, it's up to you...the Husky is certainly a wonderful choice...I have one of each and love them both. You can't take it on an airplane, and it's a pain to move, and you can't get 3-across very easily with it, but if you don't have those needs, then go for it. It's my 6.5 yo's favorite seat, and he chooses it over his other boosters! (and he CAN buckle it himself...it's no more time consuming than a booster seat is...thank gosh!)

We were in the same situation you were 1 1/2 years ago. My oldest DS is off the charts for height and around the 50th percentile for weight.
We ended up going with a Britax SuperElite (previous model of the Husky) and we are very happy with it. DS will be 4 in May and still rides in it without any complaints. We do have a booster that we use when he rides in someone else's car (the SE or Husky is not a seat you want to be moving around very much since it's so big & heavy).
