DS is almost 3, about 34 lbs and 36-37". I feel like I have to find him a new seat soon and have to research it *now*. Is he really going to take nearly a year to get to 40lbs/40"? I have a hard time believing it, even though all the charts tell me this is the case.

Yes, he will quite possibly take a year or longer. I have three children. My first hit 24 pounds at 2 and stayed there until age 4. Now at age 6 he is about 43 pounds. My second son is age 3, he is 33-34 pounds. He has been at this weight for a year and he just keeps getting taller but doesn't gain any weight. I think the only thing you will need to worry about is height. Just keep an eye on that.
