All,

I just purchased an '06 Honda Civic. Has anyone found a quality carseat that fits rock solid in one? My son just turned 4 years old, is 34lbs, and only about 38" tall. He sits front facing. He doesn't need a seat that is too wide.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Are you looking to keep him in a 5 pt harness or move him to a booster?

I'd like to keep him in the 5 point harness since he is short.

Thank you,

What is his torso height? Sit him on the floor flat against the wall and measure from the floor to the top of his shoulders where the harness would be in a FF carseat.

Do you have a price range/buget?

How long do you want to keep him in a 5 pt harness- 40, 65 or 80 lbs?

Thanks

I've measured his height and while sitting on the floor, it is 14" to the top of his shoulders.

Price is not a concern and I'd like to have him in a 5-pt harness up to 40lbs. That will probably be another 2 or 3 years.

THank you !!!

The Recaro Young Sport is a seat with a harness to 40 lbs and is a great BPB with SIP. The seat is ~$250 but you may be able to find a discount or coupon. I believe the harness height is about 18". If you want to keep him in a harness past 40 lbs any of the larger Britax seats would work- MA/DC/BV/Regent.

I have never installed this seat before but if you have a baby specialty store you could try it in the car before you buy it.

Thank you for the recommendations. I'm seriously considering the Marathon. I've read a few other sites and have heard the Marathon may not fit in a small car. I'll have to try it out before I buy it.

I was wondering however, if I wanted to keep my son in a 5-pt harness until he was only 40lbs, which seats would you suggest? Is the Roundabout the best in that situation? How much larger is the Marathon versus the Roundabout?

One last thing...according to the 2005 version of Toddler Bargains, the Cosco Summit seat was a good choice. I've seen some references on the board this past week that it is no longer considered so. Why the change?

Here's my dilemma...currently we've got a Cosco Summit and a Safety 1st Entegra seat. We need a new seat for the new car, and I'll most likely be getting one of the Britax seats. But should we get rid of the Cosco seat and get a safer one for the third, rarely used vehicle (which is a Subaru and rates better than average in passenger safety according to my insurancy company)?

Thanks for the advice!!

I fit a MA RF in a Mazda 5- which is alot smaller than a Civic IMO.

I would recommend the Recaro Young sport as a harness seat to 40 lbs as well as a few Graco/Evenflo Combo seats. I would not reccomend the RA over the MA because its back is shorter than the other seats and your son could not be in the seat for as long. The MA is not alot larger than the RA but the back is taller and will last alot longer.

I would not reccomend a Cosco Summit because the back is very short and it is not a good BPB. I personally would not buy another seat if you have one that fits your son right now but i would be aware that it might not last alot longer.

I'm gearing up to install a big Britax Regent in my 2000 Toyota Echo. Is your Civic 2 door or 4 door? I had looked into getting a Marathon, a Decathalon or a Boulevard (all Britax) and they all fit in my Echo. Don't get me wrong, these are larger seats than what you're used to but they all fit fine. I'll have to install the Regent WITHOUT the recline bar, though. If you want to keep your child harnessed longer I'd get a 5pt that goes to 65 lbs or look into the Regent if it's not too big for your car.
