View Full Version : Window Guards

We have a two-story home and are looking into the possibility of buying window guards for our 2-year old daughter's room. The only one I've come across in catalogs comes from One Step Ahead (Guardian Angel Window Guard). Our windows open horizontally and they only sell the kind that can be used with windows that open vertically. Has anyone had any experience with window guards? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Saw no responses to your inquiry since you posted. We too have been inquiring since we're building a second story currently, and building code requires that our window sill is NO higher than 44 inches from the floor. Ours ended up being even less, so falls are a huge concern of mine....as well as potential falls from the loft, etc.

After numerous questions to Pella Window, to our local Building Dept, and Local Police...we found everyone totally clueless!! (to our surprise) We did learn though that during the summer especially, there are on average, 3 children per week in Chicago area who fall out of windows.

The one productive call I did make, was to a business found in our yellow pages phone book, that is dedicated to toddler safety proofing. They come to your home on a consultant bases, and look over your current set up, and then THEY make suggestions based on your particular needs. You may have such a business by you too. This one happened to be in Naperville, IL. We'll call them once we're settled into our new home, since they were the only ones who appeared knowledgeable on the subject, and actually interested in our concerns.

A news story recently appeared on network news about window falls, and appropriate child proofing. I haven't checked the network's website, but plan to do so. (they said more info was posted on the site) Let me know if you're interested in this too. I'll find the web address and let you know.

If you have learned anything new since you've posted your message, pls. do share with me.

Thanks for replying. Haven't read/seen/heard anymore about window guards since my initial post, so I've kind of given up on this topic for now. My DD has already moved to her room and we've tried as much as possible to make it safe for her. We don't have any furniture near the windows, and we keep it closed and locked whenever she's alone. We've taught her not to go near the window. I do realize that curiousity will take over a toddler, but so far she's not had any interest in that area whatsoever (keeping my fingers crossed). The weather where we live is pretty mild, so there's no real need to keep the windows open on a regular basis when she's in the room. If it gets too hot, we just turn on the AC. In addition, we make sure her wooden horizontal blinds (they're pretty beefy) are closed. We are still interested in window guards, so if you happen to come across any new info, please don't hesitate to post it.

Here are a couple links I ran across that may lead you in the right direction. Good luck!

I believe there is also a board on toddlers and window safety at www.ezboard.com
Also try Google searches, etc. to find other product manufacturers and compare prices/quality.

I found a couple links that might be useful. They sell vertical window guards that work on windows that open horizontally.

I also found the website address for more information on Guardian Angel Window Guards. I think you can specially order some to fit in windows that open horizontally.

I hope this helps.
