I have used disposables (until the potty training stage) with both my first two children but with our new baby I may have an opportunity to stay home. Because of this, I'm considering using CDs and was wondering if there is a website anyone knows of that gives you comparisons and explains the different terms, etc. As someone who's never used CDs it's really all very confusing! Someone told me that the most current issue of Mothering has an article on CD. Would it be helpful to me and does anyone know if I can read it online?

TIA for any help you can give!

There are several. In particular, I found these two to be the most helpful:

http://punkinbutt.com/diaper_types.html
http://diapering.tripod.com/faqjuststartingout.html

However, they don't really rate brands within each category (Chinese prefolds, fitteds, all-in-ones), so you'll likely need to do more research on your own. However, it does seem that everyone has had a different experience and resultant opinion on each brand.

I don't think you can read the Mothering article online, but check to see if your local public library has it. Ours does. Or you could browse through it at a retail location, I know Whole Foods sells individual issues.

As far as learning all the terms and lingo, the best thing to do would be to read through a couple diapering discussion boards. You can probably figure it all out that way, and if there are some things you don't know, just post and ask! Two discussion boards that I think have a lot of info are the Parent's Place one at http://boards.parentsplace.com/messages/get/ppdiapers397.html or the Mothering board at http://mothering.com/discussions (click on diapering).

Comparing different systems is easy, but comparing different brands is much harder because there are SO many! Basically, there are prefolds, fitted diapers, all-in-ones, pocket diapers, and covers. You need to use a separate cover for prefolds and fitted diapers, and you need some absorbant material (such as a prefold, or a special insert) to stuff into pocket diapers. With prefolds you can use either pins or a snappi, or you can use a wrap style cover and use neither. All-in-ones are the most expensive option partly because you are using the cover part only once, when if you use a separate cover you can reuse it many times. Prefolds and covers are the cheapest option.

If you have more specific q's feel free to ask them here!

Thanks everyone for all the help! I'm going to check out all the websites you mentioned and hopefully I can figure it out. I'm really interested in checking into it since not having the baby in someone else's care really opens up the options. Of course, this is my last baby and I won't be able to spread the cost of CD over more than one child but I guess I can always sell them on ebay. Thanks again for your help!
