Personally, I've never found much difference between needle types. Bamboo and wood "feel" nice in the hand, but I think I knit faster on aluminum and other metals. I don't perasonally like plastic.

Here's a tip to potentially save some money. I would start by buying a cheap pair of "regular" knitting needles in size 6. See what gauge you get with those. Your gauge with circular should be similar. It may not be exact, but it will let you know if you need 6's, 7's or 5's.

I had to go w/bamboo on the 16" circulars. That's all the yarn shop had - $9 bucks each - yuck.

Linda,
If you have no luck finding them, I can get you some $9 buck ones.

I've only ever knitted once in my life (a scarf for sis-in-law that turned out wonderful) but the woman at the yarn store promised me bamboo was easiest for a beginner. I'd go with bamboo!

FYI, here's a site with 16" bamboo needles for $7.50.

I found this same brand at a local yarn store for $6.75, so that's not a bad price.

Edited to add: And here's another place with an enameled steel needle (which is what I have, but a different brand) for even less!

Linda - here's another site for needles. I think I need to order some for my mom, too. I'm trying to learn to knit but my husband keeps making fun of me, so many holes in my stitches!!!! Think I'll have my mom knit the soakers for me for now until I can master this art of knitting! Good luck!

Also, another thing that I learned from the yarn shop owner is, if you are a beginner, to use light-colored yarn so that it will be much easier to see your stitches and what you are doing. Save the truly dark colors for once you get the hang of things.

Joann's has pretty good prices on their bamboo needles and for today only they have free shipping with no minimum. http://www.joann.com/catalog.jhtml?CATID=52434&PRODID=11857

The size sevens are jusr $7. And it looks like they have your other sizes, too. As a relative beginner (about a year), I find that I lose less stitches and it comes out more evenly with bamboo but metal goes a little more quckly.

Good luck!

Just FYI, those were 29" needles. here's the link to Joann's 16" needles:

Interesting to see all that stuff on their website, since my local Joann's has NO wooden needles and NO 16" needles in stock!!
