Want to try cloth for 1st baby

Hi everyone, I'm due in November, and want to try cloth diapers. However, I'm alone in my interest. DH wants to use disposables, and my MIL thinks I'm crazy for wanting to try cloth.

So... I'd like to purchase a small amount of good supplies and give CDing a try. I'd like to try it for a while, and if it doesn't work out for me, then I would resell the supplies on Ebay. (I could buy the supplies on Ebay too, if it saves money.)

I will be a SAHM, and my goal is to save money over the long haul with cloth diapers. We probably still would use an occasional disposable as well.

If I were you I would purchase a package from Natural Babies or Lil Bunz. The Newborn plus package has prefolds and Kissaluvs. THe one from Lil Bunz also includes pocket diapers. THat way down the line you can decide if you prefer prefolds or fitteds or pockets. Or you could go with the newborn basic package which is only prefolds and covers. It is a lot cheaper and many people here have said that all they needed for their newborn was cpf's.

Other than that you will want to purchase a bag for your diapers. There was just another post about nylon bags at Walmart. You can buy 2 for $3.96 each. I would get two because I wash mine right along with my diapers. Many people here bought a Sterilite trash can from Target and use the bag to line it. I never bothered and just kept the bag in a corner. But that was becasue I was moving. Whatever you decide, both methods work. Also, some cloth wipes are lovely regardless of whether you decide to cd or not. Two favorites around here seem to be darling diapers and SMJAE. I also really like Little Lounging Lizards.

You can totally do this, its not hard and its fun! I made the same decision you did, and I'm lovin' my cloth! I had prefolds, covers, and Kissaluvs for my guy. The KL were cute, but he outgrew them in 4 weeks. Next baby, just prefolds for the first month or so. I second the package idea. I have ordered from both lilbunz and naturalbabies, and the customer service can't be beat, from either! You can probably spend less than $100, and end up with dipes that will fit for up to six months! Try diapering a sposie baby for several months on only $100. Let us know when you start shopping if you have questions, the lingo on the diapering sites can be daunting.

OK, I'm clueless -- what do you need a bag for? It's not for the dirty diapers, is it?? Wouldn't that get um, icky?

Thanks for all the links -- I'll need to find some good quiet time to learn more about CDing. I've never really diapered a baby at all, so I've got quite a learning curve.

you want to line your diaper pail with a bag so the diaper pail doesn't get icky. :)

The bag then goes in the wash with the diapers.
