View Full Version : Down and dirty, short and sweet. Recomendations for NB dipes?

Despite the fact that Lola was in cloth from about the age of 4 days, I've never owned any NB cloth dipes. We were gifted about six months of a diaper service. Anyway, I'm looking for recommendations for NB dipes. I'll want to have both prefolds and fitteds.

My only question about prefolds is whether anyone thinks it's a good idea to have a dozen or so premie sized prefolds on hand. We used infant sized prefolds from the start and there was a LOT of excess cloth. Lola looked liked we'd stuffed a brick in her diaper cover. I just thought with the premie size I might have a chance of using a snappi and thereby have better poop containment. Plus, I think it'd certainly allow for the babe to move around more freely. I don't think Lola was uncomfortable but I do think she could have been more comfortable.

In terms of fitteds, I'm not looking to go too overboard (i.e. no newborn sized Fireflies, etc. I'd love 'em but I can't afford 'em). What would folks recommend besides Kissaluvs (which I'll probably get)? Remember, I'm looking for moderately priced options.

And please indulge this pregnant mama and don't tell me to do a search. I know there's a wealth of information buried in the archives. I used to be a frequent poster to this forum...actually, I posted more on the subject of cloth diapers before there was a forum. Let me be lazy in my huge state. Just give it to me quick and dirty, short and sweet.

Thanks so much,

Yes- I recommed a dozen preemie prefolds. Get Indian's from granitesmith on ebay...they aren't very absorbant, but you will be changing frequently enough it shouldn't matter and they will fit a LOT better.
I have heard wonderful things about nanipoos newborn fitteds and they are very reasonably priced. www.nanipoos.com I bought one just to see and it sure is cute! LOL! Newborn diapers in general have very good resale, you might be able to find some on ebay if you are looking for used ones. Since they don't get used very long, they are usually in very good condition.

As for me...I plan to make 18 NB fitteds when I get pregnant again (hopefully early next year)and get another 6-12 from various WAHM's. I love making NB dipes! They are so cute and tiny! I have preemie PF's from Dallin. His cord didn't fall off until he was 5 weeks, so I didn't get to CD him a lot till that point. I'm just rambling now...congrats on your pregnancy and enjoy building your tiny tiny stash!!!

Shhhhh Lori. You're blowin' my cover. I know they have size 0s available and I didn't mention it because I didn't want anyone here to buy them out from under me. :) The outlet is where I've purchased all my Kissaluvs from in the past.

I would second Shanelle's recommendation of getting preemie prefolds. I got Euros on the recommendation of Teresa (Granitesmith) because they supposedly last longer because of their tighter weave. Why would you want them to last longer? Well, after your newborn outgrows them, you can use them as doublers in the infant sized prefolds. That's what I did and it worked wonderfully. But you could probably use Chinese or Indians as well. Generally, I've noticed that the Chinese PFs shrink the least, so if you want the preemie size to last a little longer, you may want the CFPs. The Euros also do not shrink very much (although more than the Chinese) and they hold up very well. The Indians shrink the most, but they are really soft and fluffy.

I also got the seconds kissaluv 0s from the outlet store and they were great in particular for night time (when you're too tired to figure out the snappi :) ). And the price was definitely right. :)

ETA: I ended up getting a dozen each of the kissaluv 0s and preemie EPFs, but after a week, got another dozen of the EPFs so I wouldn't have to do laundry every day (it gave me more breathing room).

HTH some,

I just read a thread over at MDC that listed newborn sized prefolds. Here's the thread if you're interested: http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?t=159939

But here's a summary...Green Mountain Diapers offers CPFs in a newborn size which is wider than the preemie size and thus fits around the baby longer than the preemie but isn't as bulky as the infant. http://greenmountaindiapers.com/diapers.htm

I loved my Kissaluvs, but I'm definitely going to be more adventurous the next time around.

ETA a couple of links if you're feeling adventurous:

Thanks for the input ladies. If anyone else has advice on creating a newborn stash, please post. And Anna, thanks for the links. I dusted off my old list of cloth diapering and sling bookmarks and added a few of the ones you mentioned.

Let me preface this by saying I have NO exp. CDing a newborn but have been reading so I'll be prepared later on ;)
Though I've read they aren't super absorbant, if you don't mind a more mass-produced NB dipe, tiny tots are CHEAP ($3.99 each!) and even cheaper if you buy them in a package of 10, I think.

Otherwise, the links provided are the only links I have in my NB bookmarks.

Sarah,
We have cd'ed Leela from day 3 and if I had to do it over, here is what i would do.

Buy 3 dozen indian infant prefolds and 6 Bumpy Day covers and a couple of snappis. That is it. Simple.
I went overboard with fitteds etc. The KLs were nice but did not hold a lot of pee and took forever to dry.
Yes, the infant size will be bulky for a month or so, but the baby will not be scooting here and there, so it does not matter. And, you get to use them for so much longer. Heck, at 8 months, the infants are what we still use (we have a wee one, 12.5 pounds).

Have you considered MJ's Sherpa Fitted.

Sounds like you like Kissaluvs so these are a less expensive alternative.

I bought my first two on ebay and then loved them so much I bought 24 more from here: http://www.thebabymarketplace.com/securestore/c153257p16257865.2.html
