View Full Version : Nubbie Question: Bummis bags vs camping bags at Walmart

I am expecting my first child in May and I'm getting very excited to CD him. I have read almost all the postings about CDing and feel I have a basic understanding of what I need. I have ordered CPF and Proraps to start out. I had a question about the diaper pail and liner. A number of people I have noticed have recommended a garbage pail from Target for the diaper pail and I have heard recommendations for both the Bummis bag as a liner and a camping bag from walmart as a liner. The Bummis bag is $12 where the walmart one is $4. Is the bummis bag 3 times better or should I just go get a couple of the walmart ones. And does anyone have any other suggestions for the diaper pail itself.
Thanks for you help!

I got a pail liner from http://www.thisoldbag.com/wetbagsandliners.html. Doesn't have the same toggle closure as a bummis (then again I don't take it out of the house, it's either in my pail or in the laundry so I don't really care). (I tried a walmart camping bag first, it was bright red and it bled on the stuff I washed it with so that was the end of that, since I generally throw my pail liner in with my dipes!)

As to the pail, look for something like this:
http://www.sterilite.com/Category.html?Section=Household&ProductCategory=83
you don't want something that seals too tightly, a little air escaping keeps the pail from heating up too much.

I have both a Bummis Bag and the Walmart Camping bags. The walmart (or maybe it's Target I got them at?) bags are softer and bigger than my bummis bag (they're khaki colored) and may not be quite as water proof. However, they're so cheap, that when I was away, I just doubled them with no problems.

That said--these bags were too big to fit in my diaper pails (I have two dekors), so I had the bummis which mostly fits, and then Ruth at SEZ made me 3 more to fit, so that I can always have two in the wash and two in the pails. The SEZ bags seem more water proof than either the Bummis or the Walmart camping bag.

The sterlite pop top that Marilee suggests is a pretty popular and affordable can that many moms here use. Some don't bother with a pail. I don't have any place to put the bags in the bathroom, so I did want pails. It turns out that two dekors work well for me because I don't have much space next to the toilet, and they're much smaller than the Sterlites. But the sterlites are definitely an affordable way to go if you want an actual pail (as opposed to just hanging the diaper bags on a hook or doorknob).

We started out with the WalMart camp bag, but only used it about 2 weeks. I washed it each time with the rest of the dipes, as recommended here, but it REEKED!!! I threw it away and am now just using plastic garbage bags (I know, not helping the environment, but it works!) I do use the same garbage bag for 4-6 days, so don't go through them even as often as the kitchen trash bag... Plus, they fit perfectly in the Sterlite diaper pail (aka trash can) that is frequently recommended here... Just my opinion on the subject!

IMO, the Bummi's bags are more superior. I have used the Walmart bags but they only last a few months before they start to wick horribly. The inside lining would get shredded in the wash. Mu Bummis (I use XL without a pail) has lasted forever, is in great condition, and no stink.) I think now that I have a front loader it would be gentler on the Walmart bags but I have long since stopped using them.

I bought my Bummis bags off of Swap so you may want to post an ISO and see what you come up with.

I just bought one of each to decide. I plan on using the bag without a pail. The Walmart bag's drawstring is very, very difficult to pull closed, so this bag is not going to work for me. The Bummis bag has sort of a cloth lining inside the track where the drawstring is and closes with ease. And now that I read this thread about the Walmart bag not working for the long haul, I will definitely return it.

The Wal-Mart camping bags were a waste of money for me. I used them less than a month. They wicked horribly and shredded in the wash — I kept having to pick plastic shreds out of the clean diapers.

ITA. The shredding of the waterproof lining drove me mad!!!!!! I spent a couple of hours one afternoon picking of every single piece of rubber on the bag and the diapers when they came out of the wash. grr.

Wow, is this the coleman camping bag that I can also get at Target? It may be that I've only used it twice on trips (2 weeks total) that I haven't run into all these problems. However, I do notice that it does start to wick. Maybe I'll just use it for cleaning rags....

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will definitely get the Bummis bag. Many times saving a few dollars in the short run cost a lot more in the long run!! :) Also thank you for the link to the garbage cans, now I know more what you've been talking about. This is one of the best boards I have been to because everyone here is so helpful. Thanks again.

I have neither for now but have looked at the walmart one and it's not a coleman brand - it's one of their brands. Maybe that's the diff?

OT, but you mentioned 2 pails - why/how do you use 2? I'm looking for a new and improved system for #2 coming! Right now I just use a large covered bucket and wash it out (no liner) but with 2 this wouldn't last me a day!!

Eileen, this bag was from Walmart and the brand is Ozark. Silly me, I went through 4 before I decided to hell with them.

How funny. I've had my Ozark bag for well over a year with none of the problems you all are talking about.

When I wash dipes, I throw the bag in for the first rinse and spin. Then I take it out and air dry it while the dipes get washed. Every once in a while (when it gets really stinky) I'll wash it by itself. I have a front loader, maybe that's the difference? It also appears that I don't wash it as much.

As for bleeding mentioned by a PP--my Bummis bag bled HORRIBLY as well. I have a few blue covers now. :P

Deb -- Did you mean to say that your Walmart bag bled terribly?? You said Bummis.
