Water Hardness Question?

I called my water company to find out how hard our water is and they said it is 19g per gallon. Does anyone know what this means? The lady at the water company said that she *thinks* that means it is hard, but I am wondering how hard it is? I am trying to figure out how much laundry detergent I should be using with my diaper laundry. We use All Free and Clear detergent. Thanks
