View Full Version : UPDATE: ORDERED!! Please talk me out of getting this WIO!

UPDATE:

I ordered the WIO - with embroidery only the front, and a plain back. Decided I didn't care for the fabric or other stuff on the butt. Should be here in a couple of weeks. :) :)

ORIGINAL POST:

Or help me rationalize :)

Ever since Trish (brigmaman) posted the link (thanks a lot, Trish!) I've been obsessing over the monkey WIO. I have never wanted to get a dipe this badly! And I just sold some stuff on Swap, so I have funded Paypal ready to go.

But DS is 27 months old, and we've given up hope for a sibling. It's ridiculous to spend that much on a dipe for a few months, right? One of my reasons to CD was to save money - so how I can justify this? This would be more than I've ever spent on anything for DS - other than shoes.

Awww...it's soooo cute! Is it super expensive? Somehow I missed the link.

Well, the only thing I can think of to talk you out of it ;) is that I don't really care for WIO's. I've had several, but always fear that they would get stained. Therefore, I only used the shells as covers (with fitteds) and never used the soakers. But...this set is cute, and you can use the cover over and over again. Maybe it has good resale value? Guess I'm not much help here :D

Love the sage/blue color and cute monkies!

Oh geez, I've been lusting after not this one, but the other one on the site, so I'm probably the last person to talk you out of this! So far, I've been very good and haven't spent much on DD's clothing or shoes, and while I haven't spent this much on a diaper yet, I figure that what I save on her shoes and clothing could be used as a splurge?

The other thing is that this probaby has good resale value. And of course you do have funded pay pal ready to go. :)

But, as Kate mentioned, I'd hate to get poop on this one, so I might end up using it as a cover more often (DD is still in the sticky poop stage), and I'd have trouble spending $50 on a cover, even if it is a work of art. (I really am trying to talk you (and me) out of it--really!)

Is there anything else in the diaper world that you would really love? Could you use the money to get a couple nice things instead of this one? (Still trying...)

One more try...if your DS gets something this darn cute will it mean he won't want to potty train because then he would have to give this up? ;-)

ETA: but of course, if you DO get this, we want pictures!!!

You could look at it as the last hurrah of diapering for you guys. You HAVE saved way more than the $50 this will cost, in the time you've been CDing. You've been very good with your purchases, avoiding all the frivolous cute dipes, up til now. (I have frivolous cute dipes, so I can say this) Also, it could be something you could keep in a memory box to pet as your boy gets older. Lots of people save favorite baby outfits and such, we weirdos just save diapers. If you have paypal, I say buy it. Sometimes its good to have something we want that makes us happy, even if it could be viewed as extravagance. At this point, I think I'm slightly ahead of disposables in cost, but I don't care. I save money elsewhere, like my crappy (fuel-efficient, paid for) 13 year old car, my sorry wardrobe, and our general lack of gadgetry around the house.

Wow!! Nice rationalization! :)

When I asked DH about it, he actually was nice enough to refrain from asking me if I needed more meds. :) He's been pushing me to get /do something nice for myself (the last several months have been really difficult in a lot of different ways). But really, the dipe would be mostly for me, right?

PS: I hear you about the saving money thing - I drive a 9 year old (paid for) car; and my wardrobe is almost entirely off clearance racks.

I LOVE Tarah's reasoning and yes, it sounds like you really need to do something nice for yourself! Personally, I would prefer a super cute diaper like this than a pedicure or manicure or hair styling....

$31 for a wool cover is a great price. That one looks nice and trim too.

Are you obsessed with the diaper or just the cute as heck embroidery? If it's the design, see if the WAHM will embroider it on a t-shirt or something that might be cheaper than the wool cover and you'd be able to "see" it more.

Did your torts professor talk about "utils"? Ours was obsessed with them--the units of pleasure or happiness or usefulness of something. So how many utils is the diaper worth to you? A sandwich eaten out at lunch is at least $6, so a week's worth of lunches out = the diaper cover. Which has more utils? If the diaper cover does, spend the $31 on the diaper and take PB&J sandwiches for a week. Yeah, he didn't talk about wool cover utils--it was more like redesigning engines and stuff. But diapers are much more interesting! ;)

Did you see the dark green with embroidered flowers in the instock? I'd be all over it if I had a girl. And "only" $27.50 - much, much easier to rationalize. :)

So what you're saying is that if I eat PB&J sandwiches for lunch for 8 days, I can get the monkey cover? :D

Unfortunately, the one I want (above Nita's) has 5 monkeys embroidered on it and is $48. But I definitely like the idea of the "utils".

Anna,

I went to George Mason, aka Chicago in Va - everything was about econ (why do think I went there?) - even Con law! :). And I'd be happy to discuss the theory of utility (cardinal v. ordinal etc.) from Bentham on, if you really, really, want to! :) And I brown bag just about every day, and eat lunch out maybe once a month - so I can't use that justification! :).

I just love the whole diaper - I like that it's wool, that it can be used as an AIO or a cover; I love the color and the embroidery.

Tarah's on the right track, I think. I'm pretty good about keeping my spending under control - so one splurge is okay! We've socked enough away in Neel's 529 for this year, and I've made a donation to cocker rescue, and I'm doing other stuff to raise funds for them.

I'm going to take a little walk right now - and I'll probably come back and order it. And place my Sugarpeas on Swap. :)

Wow! That's beautiful! I love that shade of green! I could definitely rationalize $27.50 over $50. No monkeys, but it's quite a beautiful cover and would look really good on her. Hmm...I do have some paypal at the moment...

So now I have to make a decision or two...

Wait, wasn't this supposed to be an intervention, LOL?

Well then you're already conserving utils! Splurge! :) Make sure to post a pic when you get it.

Hmmm...were we supposed to be talking you out of this?

Thanks for the update, Nita! Can't wait to see it on Neel's fluffy butt. :) I did end up getting the green one, since DH said the cover was going to be under her dress, so he said to keep it simple (and less expensive). I think the green one should be very pretty, so I'm going to have to let her wander around in a t-shirt a lot. :D

Rashmi,

Too late!! :) It will be a cute dipe.

I am selling off some other stuff - so I might still take you up on the offer to go shopping. I so need some new underclothes! :) (okay, I have issues with using more specific terms in a public forum, even though I happily discuss mama cloth.)
