View Full Version : Feeling the wool and prefold love. Need more WIOs

After cutting up another prefold, now I love using them. Especially with the wool AngelDry cover. And DS keeps saying "comfy." :) My super trim combo is a regular CPF cut into half, plus one of my home-made doublers topped with a fleece liner in the AngelDry cover. Now I'm really looking forward to the prefitteds from Growmearainbow.

So - anyone know of any other WIOs that are relatively affordable and available? DS's caregiver is willing to give the wool a shot, too.

I can't believe I wasted all this time being afraid of wool.

Prefolds AND Wool. Nita, you have completely and totally crossed over to the darkest of dark sides! :)
When you say WIO, do you mean something that has to snap into the wool cover? Sounds like you are just laying the prefold and doubler in a wool cover, so would any wool cover do?

Hmm...could you contact beccabottoms to find out if she's making any? (I have no idea if they would be affordable and available.) She (charis at beccabottoms.com) said she's made some WIO that are newly designed for chunky thighs, but maybe she has an older design that would be good for Neel? I also noticed that Angelwraps has some WIO, but she's not taking customs at the moment (had a baby on tax day). :( Let me see...

Actually, what about sugarpeas wool wraps? Don't those have snap-ins? Someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong. But even if they don't have snap-ins, you can still use the wool wraps the way you do with the Angeldry cover. They're available many places, so you might actually be able to get your hands on them.

Here's some places that sell them:

http://www.papayapatch.com/

Hope someone else has better ideas for you!

ETA: If you don't mind just laying in the prefold and doubler and you really love the Angeldry cover, you could always get more of them...

Nita,

I don't have any suggestions for new stuff but I have a EUC SP WIO available FS if you're interested :). It's a wool flannel cover + fleece topped snap-in (the snap-in is a second). I wouldn't call it super trim but it is a WIO. Let me know if you'd like to see pics.

Rashmi,

I'd like another WIO for use at daycare. If it's snapped in, then it's pretty much fool proof to use. I'm using the prefold only at home.

Eileen,

The fleece sugarpeas really doesn't work for Neel, so I'm reluctant to try the wool. I have a side-snapping large fleece cover - and it's huge. Too high in the rise, and way too wide in the stride. So unless someone can reassure me that the wool is cut differently, I'd rather avoid Sugapeas.

And I am looking for something snap-in. Easier for daycare. If I can't find anything, I may contact Steph at AngelDry and see if I can talk her into doing a wool cover with snap-in soakers.

Thanks for the Beccabottoms suggestion - but aren't they practically hyena dipes?

Thanks Sarah! But Sugarpeas don't work well for Neel. In fact, I'm trying to sell my fleece cover with snap-in as well as a fitted! :)

Nita,

Have you tried the SP fleece or wool covers in a medium? I ask because I find SP covers to run large. Astrid is big for her age and can actually wear a L sized FF. I have a size 2 SP and a large size SS SP (one of the work horses of our stash) and both are much too big still. She's only on the second smallest snap setting in our medium SP wool covers though and has quite a bit of growing room left in them. Just some food for thought.

Nita -
I love wool but I've been afraid to try a WIO or PF type dipe with wool. Haven't you had any cleanup nightmares??? I would love to do all wool for Miss P but the thought of handwashing wool every day makes me cringe :(

Now, as for your PF creation, I can't get an image in my head. How are you doing this??

Some affordable WIO's I looked at were wild oats http://www.wildoatsdiapers.com/ I know when she first opened some MDC mamas raved while others posted about CS issues. Looks like she's got some in stock and the price is SO CHEAP for wool ($20 for a med WIO!!) that it might be worth the risk?

Neel poops once a day, typically in the morning. So I had the rest of the day to use wool without worry about a mess. :)

I've emailed Wild Oats about a large, which I think I'd need for Neel, and she isn't listing any instock. Her custom isn't any cheaper than Busy Bees (both are about $32). But if I can get a WIO for less than that, I'm all over it.

About the prefolds: this is what I did:

I cut one regular CPF into half (along the short edge), and blanket stitched the raw edge by hand (I don't have a serger or sewing machine). I cut another one into quarters and did the same - I posted a pic in another thread about my cheap low tech doublers.

What I did yesterday was put one of the doublers in between the half prefold foled what would be the wrong way if it was still a whole CPF, and top it with a microfleece liner (also home-made). So I basically had 3/4 of a prefold in the cover. This made it for two and half hours (Daddy took him to the playground) with no problems.

The nice thing about the half prefold is that I'll be able to trifold a microfiber towel and sandwich it in between the prefold if I want to increase absorbency. Though I'm seriously tempted to cut up a microfiber towel, and just use half, since Neel is not a heavy wetter.

This cutting up stuff is very addicting. :)

Sarah,

Nope, never tried the mediums. Do you have any? Are the mediums any narrower in the stride than the large? That is the biggest thing for us. Neel seems to have a very narrow stride, and the only SP that works is a med-large fitted 'second' that is significantly narrower. And our new Angeldry covers are noticably narrower than SP too.

There has to be a huge difference in comfort. Neel really protests every time he sees the SP, but was perfectly willing to have his dipe changed if I was using one of the Angeldry covers. And that was *such* a relief! :)

I'm still waiting on a reply from Wild Oats about WIOs. Also waiting on my BusyBees. If it fits, I might just get another one without embroidery - the price is pretty comparable to SP at that point.

I don't have a large wool cover to compare my mediums to but I just measured and the stride on my medium cover and snap-in are 7" and 6 3/4" respectively. If you're interested in just trying one out, I'm happy to send my WIO to you for a test drive.
