Now that my daughter isn't growing so fast, I'm considering trying out CDs. Before investing, I'd like to maybe try some used ones from swap or ebay. I'm concerned about disinfecting/sterilizing used ones, though. I probably will go with AIOs to start with, and I've read you aren't supposed to use bleach or hot water.

What do you do to sterilize AIOs?

Thanks!

I just wash in super hot water (turn up the water heater temporarily with my regular detergent, and dry on hot. (I wouldn't do this every time but PUL can handle being dried on hot, some WAHMs actually recommend it for new dipes to "seal" the sewing holes.)

We have a stash of at least half used and they seem perfectly clean to me. I do know that some people have used a little bleach (gasp) once without a problem, though. (I have been too chicken to try it.)

Thanks Marilee.

I bet a 1 time bleaching wouldn't hurt. Maybe I will get a small lot and try bleach on one. The other thing I was thinking about was putting it in a pot of boiling water for a few minutes. Maybe I will try that one time. I mean, there must be a way to safely sterilize them. I imagine people have to do that even with new ones if their baby had a yeast infection or diaper rash or something...

If anyone tried bleach or boiling, I'd love to hear how it turned out...

The boiling water thing is okay, but only if there aren't any snaps! I'm pretty sure the snaps will melt--yikes! Just washing them on hot should disinfect them enough. I do know that some of the moms have used a tad of bleach with no problems. You could always try it with a small lot, as you said, and see if you have any fading problems. I did that once and my entire load smelled sour, so I never did it again.

In addition to washing in hot water, you can add a few drops of GSE (grapefruit seed extract). I use this for a lot of things!

Here is a link with more info on its uses and properties:

I just wash wash my regular diapers and a few drops of tea tree oil. They really should be fine though. I've never felt the need to bleach a diaper.
