I am converting to cloth wipes... I guess I am a full cloth convert now :7 I have read a few different recipes can anyone give me suggestions on what has worked for them. I used to make wipes from viva paper towels using baby bath and water. Is that ok? I see alot of moms use tee tree oil? What is that why is is good and where would you fine it.

Okay, my favorite place to get essential oils is from Iherb.com because I get a lot of stuff, and they have really good discounts. For some of the things I get, I can get it for half the price I can get it from Whole Foods.

They have the following standard discounts:
Standard On-line Discount (6% discount), No Minimum: S
Health Care Professionals (10% discount), No Minimum: P
Best Value -- $60.00 or more--(10% discount!): B
Large orders--$240.00 or more--( 20% discount!): L

Anyway, I haven't made my own wipes solution, but I'm currently using Baby Bits. However, if I were to make my own, I would probably add a couple drops of baby bath, water, and a couple drops of TTO and possibly GSE. If you do a search for Wipes Recipes in this forum, you'll find some good links to past threads talking about this. The TTO is for its antiseptic qualities, as is Grapefruit Seed Essential Oil.

I make my own solution and do roughly a cup of water to one tsp baby oil and one tsp baby shampoo. So far it has been really great, my daughter has not yet had a diaper rash. I made my own wipes too. Bought some flannel at the fabric store and used my serger around the edges. I just wash them with the diapers. As the PP said, there are a lot of different recipes. I have not bothered with anything any more complicated or gourmet, if you will, since we seem to go through it so fast. I actually recycled a Diet Coke two liter bottle and mix my solution in that and then pour it into the container as needed. We go through it really fast, so I am not worried about mold or fungus. I make my own. Be sure to use distilled water; it lasts a LOT longer!

I just put some apricot oil, lavender oil, calendula oil in. I meant to use some kind of baby wash too but all I had was Burt's Bees baby bar and I couldn't use that easily. ;) I didn't use TTO because I have heard that some babes are sensitive to it in the wipe mix and it's a potential danger for cats. So, I just skipped it.

Be very, very careful with the TTO - it basically burned my DS. If you do use it, just use a single drop for a big batch. Of course, my DS reacted to Baby Bits, too :( We stick with plain water, even though I have stacks of EO.

Oh, no. Poor Neels. Kaya hasn't reacted to Baby Bits, so I think the small amount of TTO in it is fine for her. But Holli's recipe smells really yummy! :) I may have to try that one.

Is Neels feeling any better?

Thanks for asking, Eileen!

He's doing better, but the rash is still there - despite Triple Paste, Hyrdrocortizone and whatever else I threw in there. The baking soda in the bath helps a lot, I think. This is driving me crazy. It definitely doesn't look like yeast - there are a couple of patches that are just bright red, but smooth. This is definitely a first for us.

Now, if only this rash would go away, I can work on trying to get rid of stains on assorted dipes. :(

Oh, BTW, apricot oil is wonderful. I used it as a massage oil for Neel through the winter.

My DH made solution once when DS was about 5 mo old, and put in WAY too much TTO, and he got a butt scald from it. OUCH! I don't use it anymore! I also use plain tap water in a wipes warmer, and I dip the wipes in before changing, it works fine.

I love, love, love Baby Bits. I dissolve half of a Baby Bits in some water, then I soak about 10 cloth wipes in the water. Finally, I drain out the excess water and wring the wipes so they are wet (but not drenched). These stay damp for awhile and don't get moldy at all. I also keep a container of different wipes (also soaked in Baby Bits) in the kitchen for wiping counters, washing hands, etc. I tried making my own solution, but got a sample of Baby Bits once and have never turned back. :)

Oh, I forgot to say that I mix it all in a gallon thing of distilled water and then I fill up spray bottles around the house (lots of diaper changing stations here) and for the diaper bags too.

Hee hee. I actually find that the baby bits take forever to dissolve. So I will use those pt water bottles (the normal size that most people drink from) and add hot water to a piece of baby bits, shake and let it sit. I have two of these. I then fill my peri bottle (half the volume of one of the water bottles) and use that when changing DD. So I always have some baby bits solution to refill the peri bottle.

I also have some of the solution in a spray bottle that we carry in the diaper bag. When we're out and about, I'll spray her and then wipe. It works pretty well. And yes, when out and about, I have been known to use the Baby Bits solution to wipe down a table, washing hands, etc. At home, I use a mixture of vinegar, Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap, a few drops of TTO and distilled water. It's a wonderful antiseptic that I use to clean everything! For floors, I use vinegar, an EO and water and that does an amazing job of cleaning the floors, cat snot, etc. Baking soda with a little EO for scent also makes a very nice gentle scrubber. With the vinegar/EO solution and sprinkled BS, I was able to clean the caked on mess on my stove recently. Even DH was impressed.

If you are interested in making any of your own cleaners, I highly recommend Clean House Clean Planet. It's a WONDERFUL book chock full of recipes for making your own household cleaners.

I've used plain old water, but I prefer a mix using mostly water, a couple of tsps of baby wash and a couple of drops of TTO. I love the TTO b/c it eliminates any diaper pail smells. I use cloth wipes and so they go in the pail w/ the dipes.

How does TTO do that? My pail does smell on the nicer side when I open it if I've done the poopy diapers for that round because I always wipe off the toilet and pail with a wipe and my antiseptic spray which contains TTO and peppermint liquid soap (Dr. B's) and even after the wash cycles are over, I can smell faint whiffs of the TTO (which I like).

Eileen,

Lavender EO is also great for getting rid of odors - and smells better than TTO - or so I think. When I have particularly nasty dipes in the pail, I soak a mini-wipe in lavender EO and throw it in the pail. No more stinkies - and no perfume either.

Hmm...I've been thinking of ordering some more EOs but have been undecided which ones to get. I currently have TTO, eucalyptus, peppermint, lime, and GSE. Other than lavender, do you have any other suggestions? Thanks!
