View Full Version : What CDs to give as a shower gift to a European friend?

Ok, CD mamas, here's a chance to show off some American ingenuity. I have a British friend who is pregnant with #2 and will CD again. What cloth diapers would make an impressive gift? Something special that is lovely and functional.

She likes the diapers and covers at www.kiddybips.com which, if you are interested, shows some CD options for another country. My friend likes fitted diapers and Motherease (who knew they were in Europe?). She doesn't like prefolds much or All In Ones.

I'd like to get her a pocket diaper and a very nice fitted and cover. I want ones that are different in fabric, style, and performance from what she might have seen so far. Knowing Tarah's love for Loveybums, I was thinking maybe one of their sherpa dipes and maybe a Fuzzibunz with a cottonbabies and/or Joeybunz insert. What cover would people recommend? Is there another fitted or pocket that would be more "Wow!"

Is there an online store where I could get everything rather than paying for shipping from multiple vendors?

I really, really like the Righteous Baby (www.righteousbaby.com) fitteds (FLAGs - Fits Like A Glove or FLAMs - Fits Like A Mitten). Of course, they aren't necessarily the easiest to get, either. But they're my favorite fitteds right now. The majority of the rest of the fitteds we have were purchased for the new baby, so I haven't been able to actually use them yet. (Since Taran's too big for them...) The Firefly (www.fireflydiapers.com) Quick Dry Color diaper I bought is gorgeous too though. Of course, I have no working experience with the Firefy - it's just really nice looking. Neither of those places offer pocket diapers though, so you wouldn't be able to get everything there.

The FuzziBunz are somewhat plain, but I really like them for Taran with a Joeybunz insert. I know there are places where you can get them embroidered to make them a bit more "Wow" too - Fussybutt (www.fussybutt.com) is one that comes to mind. Fussybutt does also have fitted diapers as well, though I've never used them. I have no clue how easy or hard it is to get a fitted there though, I've never looked or tried. It's not the only place to offer embroidery on FuzziBunz either, it's just the only one I can think of - I've never done it, myself. ;) FuzziBunz are the only pocket diaper we've tried though - since they work for us, I never bothered to try another. ;)

Anyway, I know there are various places that sell both pockets and fitteds, it just depends on what fitted you want. The ones I like best from actual use (or am so far impressed with the way they at least look) don't generally come from places where you can get pockets as well. Of course, I just haven't tried as many diapers as others. I've generally been lucky in that what I've bought I really like (for the most part).

You could try some place like lilbunz to order a few things. She has fuzzi bunz and various other diapers etc. I personally like fuzzi bunz the best. We get the best fit and I have NEVER had wicking (even when DH put Lil'bit to bed with only one microfiber towel- the thing was soaked but she was bone dry!) They have the cute new bug print and I LOVE their lime green color. I also like happy heineys prints, although they are crunchy they have some cute prints and they hold up really well too.

For fitteds I only have a few but I do like the quality of the country cuttins fitted I have and she has some cute prints. For aios I like my lucys hope chest, but it doesnt hold up as well wicking wise - its just so darn cute though! I have limited covers so I cant comment on those...what about a cute wool soaker? BJMarket place has REALLY cute ones as well as several other places. Otherwise...maybe some of the hyena diapers you can try and score with a tale of hoe "to die for" they are. The only other thing I can think of is a WAHM type store...I know there is a list somewhere of no-name type diapers that we all have tried and liked.....hths some....let us know what you decide to get!

Sherpa sounds heavenly :) Loveybums might be hard to get though. Check out http://www.sugarplumbaby.com/catalog.php?category=39 She some yummy velour and sherpa diapers in stock.

But my favorite is something with a really cute print. How about a fitted or cover from http://www.tykiediapers.com/ ?

As for pockets, you could get an embroidered pocket to jazz things up a bit. http://www.jamtots.com/shop/home.php?cat=361 I really like the new colors that Wonderoos has and that might be a nice option for a new mom. I think a Wonderoo would hold in newborn poop better than a FB because of the way the legs are sewn.

Another fun option would be some prefitteds or maybe just some plain ol dyed prefolds. For those I would turn to the wonderful mamas here on the board.

Loveybums do have a few left in stock. I think she stocked 6/1. Muttaqin still has a few instock this morning and try calico baby.

The problem with any diaper is that the fit of the diaper will depend in part on the shape of the baby. For example, FBs never fit Kaya all that well, but Snap-EZ did. Wonderoos didn't fit all that well, but it was better at holding leaking BF'd poop than FB. Baby Blankets never fit well (better for skinny thighs) but Apronstrings fit very well (better for chunky thighs). I really love the fleece pockets that both Apronstrings and Snap-EZ make. So cuddly and so far, I haven't noticed any wicking problems with prints vs. solid fleece.

I love my OCV diaper (curious george print) from Tykie Diapers, and while I've never tried her covers, they look really beautiful.

Mudpie babies also makes some beautiful fitted diapers (she has a ton of prints), but they're not the most absorbent of my diapers (but that's mostly because Kaya needs hemp). Still, they work with an extra doubler in there and I like the design of the soakers (attached, but loose so they wash and dry better).

The BJM soakers are beautiful, but they're not great for heavy wetters. But a wool soaker might make a "wow" gift. Just make sure you get a slightly larger one for later use when leaky poop is not an every diaper occurrence. :)

I'd put getting a Fussybutt up there with winning the Power Ball. Okay, so maybe it's not quite that hard or unlikely, but they're most definitely hyena and they aren't easy to come by.

Angie: Wow, you gave me lots of great ideas. Jamtots had lots of stuff I was interested in. DO you know anything about the following:

They have a new striped Wonderoo One Size pocket. Do you know if it has any wicking issues? Does the one-size ability really work?

Also, Jamtots has Bummis Cotton Wraps in prints I've never seen, like seahorses and blue with green turtles. Again, any wicking issues?

They also had Swaddlebee pockets, which interestedme to be for myself.

I think with cotton wraps, you'll always have to worry about compression wicking, especially if you have a heavy wetter. But I do like those prints. Very nice. :) For the Wonderoos, I didn't like the fit on Kaya when she was around 3-4 months (when I first tried it). It just seemed ultra bulky. For the most part, it did seem to contain leaky poop (better than the FB), but I didn't like the fit on her. But Wonderoos does seem to work for some people here so it's one of those try it and see kinds of things. I did have a try it package where you could try it for up to two weeks for $5 and if you liked it, you could keep it for a discounted price, but if you didn't, you could send it back. I definitely liked those terms!

I have the monkey print wonderoo and it is not my favorite diaper. Fit is "ok" it is mainly used by my older son or dh if they have to change him quickly. It is not a dipe I leave on him long term.
Swaddlebees on the other hand I really like. They fit Nathan very well and are not bulky. He is not a super soaker but they do really well for us.

I'm sure no one was waiting with bated breath for an update, but I just yesterday sent off a CD gift to my European friend. I sent her a FUzzibunz small with Joeybunz insert, ordered from lilbunz.com, in the pretty light lavendar color (one of my favorite colors, in fact). I really wanted the two color Fuzzibunz, but discovered they had the thick fleece, which I think makes the whole diaper feel too thick.

So, it was not an exciting gift by hyena standards and did not live up to my lofty goals in my original post, but I feel very good about it. I like FB a lot, especially with a nice thin Joeybunz, and think the adjustability of snaps and stuffings means my friend will get a lot of use out of it. If she likes it, I'm sure she can find a way to order more inexpensively from Europe, which might not be true if I got her some WAHM diapers.

Thanks everyone for your input!

Hey, I always think that something that actually works well with nice colors is better than something that looks good but might not work as well. And the ability to get more of these is definitely a plus! Please let us know how she likes them. :)
