View Full Version : UPDATE, sorta: Question about CDing and poop

UPDATE: Okay, okay, I'm going to give it a shot! I even talked with DH about cloth and he surprised me by being completely fine with it. (He's a little unsure about the washing, as am I, but we'll see how it goes.) I just want to thank everyone who replied. I've started looking at my fluffy options, and it seems like pockets or AIOs would be the best thing to do as far as ease of transition goes. Anyway, I'm sure I'll be posting with more questions soon. Thanks! :)

------------------
Now that DD is not needing umpteen diaper changes a day, I've been thinking about switching (at least partly) to cloth. I recently bought some mama cloth and I'm feeling a bit guilty that I'm using cloth (and really prefer it), while leaving her in disposable diapers. Anyway, I'm starting to look into cloth dipes and I have a question about poop that is probably TMI, but, hey, this is the butts forum so I figure it's allowed! :)

DD is 15 months old and she went through a period where her poops were more formed (aka "poo poo patties") and they were pretty easy to clean off of her and fairly easy to dump into the toilet. Those days are long gone, however. Now, I dread poopy dipes b/c it's so hard to get DD cleaned up and forget about dumping any poop in the toilet - it just doesn't happen.

All this to ask, how difficult would it be to deal with this kind of poop in a cloth dipe? Should I just wait until we get through this sticky poop stage (it has to be a stage, right?)? My DH isn't too excited about CDs, but I can convince him if I think it would work for us. Sorry for the rambling post, I'm just so unsure...

First off, if cloth is what you want to do, then you can do it! :) That said, Kaya only has the formed pooped every once in a while, and it's usually sticky. We've been using the minishower since day one and it's really a wonderful invention. I've even recently started using it on myself. :) Even if you don't switch to CD's, you may want to consider getting a minishower so you can spray off her Sposies (cutting down on pail stink and not throwing feces into the landfill).

So is it difficult? Sure, it's more difficult than when she has a formed poop, but it's just one of those things we deal with and it's not that big a deal with the minishower. Some people here will even use ricepaper liners so they can peel off most of it into the poop and just spray off the edges where the poop got on the dipe.

About 8 months into cloth for Kaya, I started thinking, "Hey, what about me?" So I put myself in cloth (and the Diva Cup) and now I'm using her minishower and her cloth wipes. Hey, fair's fair, right? :) (Sort of the reverse of your situation.)

Fleece liners (homemade, cheap) and a minishower ($30 or so) are your friends. The consistency will go back and forth. Some days it's an easy dump and some you need to pull out the hose.

You can do it! :)

We use flushable liners in the morning, since that's when he poops most often. It works well for us.

Also, I've used sposies every now and then, and I think the chemicals change something in the poop. They were really sticky and stuck to him a lot. I had to scrub his butt clean. In cloth, that's not the case. It may be messy, but it cleans off him very easily.

I've had a bad CD day, so bear that in mind... I am far less experienced than these ladies, but I do think that poopy diapers are the hurdle to get over when CDing. Some poops are easy to clean and some are not. Some are bad, like this morning's stuff that looked for all the world like sludge and leaked everywhere (although fortunately not out of the cover). Really sticky poop doesn't come off the fleece liners easily either, at least not for me (I sometimes use my regular faucet to spray, but don't have a mini shower).

I have two brands of rice liners that I'm trying and they do help, but I still keep making mistakes with them. (Liners too big, liners positioned wrong, guessed wrong about when to use them, or my personal favorite, forget to flush liners while at a playgroup and the host's 4 year old runs out of the bathroom in a panic screaming "Mommy, there's something disgusting in the toilet!")

Where was I? The pee diapers will be so easy that you'll wonder why everyone turned against cloth diapers. Then every so often, there'll be a dirty diaper and you'll remember why. On those days, the cost savings of cloth is what keeps me going! :-)

It's easy. Buy a minishower. And get over any fear of poop ever getting on your hands. It happens.

With DS's poops, whether they are solid or mushy or on a fleece lining or right on the hemp of his SPs, I get as much of the poop into the toilet as I can, unsnap any snaps that need unsnapping, and put the CD into the pail. We have seen a couple of stains stick around for a couple of washes, but for the most part this has worked just fine.

If you get pockets, I find dumping poop, even the sticky mushy kind, very easy. It sort of peels off of the fleece...

Even my very hesitant DH, who was firmly against CDing, is okay with dumping all but the worst poops...

The mini shower is a CDing mom's best friend. My DH also used to wear gloves when spraying the poopy dipes. I made fun of him, but I wore them for a few really poopy dipes. It really isn't all that bad if you have a mini shower.

Thanks for the update. We look forward to helping you build your stash. :) If you're looking for pockets (that are not SEZ) or AIOs, you should probably join the diaper hunt so that you can get 10% (usually) off for the month of June. :) Plus it's a fun way to see what's available out there. ;)

Eileen-
Thanks! I joined the hunt over the weekend when I was just starting to investigate all of the cloth options out there. I registered for the hunt, but didn't get any sort of discount code to use at the sites. Maybe I didn't get it because I registered after the hunt officially started??? Oh well, it would be nice to get a discount. Maybe I can email diaperdecisions and see about the code. Hmmmm...

And I'm totally befuddled about my options. I didn't know it would be so complicated getting started.
