Claire just had her first poopy CD which got on both the prefold and the Motherease Airflow cover. It's total liquid...no solid stuff to dump off. I rinsed it in the sink. But is there something that I do to pretreat it before washing so it doesn't get really stained? I know you old timers are probably laughing at my question but I really am still just figuring it all out. TIA!

Well, for the most part, if I rinsed it out, I didn't tend to get stains (but that may vary depending on the hardness of water, etc.). If you want to be sure, you can spray the stains with Zout before washing it. I tended to do that (actually I used Shout or something like that) along the bindings of the covers, which is where they tended to stain. For BFd poop, any stains on PFs can usually be sunned out.

Often it will just wash out. I used Motherease Rikki wraps, and sometimes the stains would get stuck in the edging material, so in that case some stain treatment would help (I use Zout).

No laughing here - it took me a long time to figure all this stuff our, too! A lot of it is trial and error, with lots of help from folks here :)

As long as Ishie was EBF, I didn't do anything to the diapers at changing time, not even rinse them; I'd do a pre-rinse cycle at wash time, and I never did get any stains, except on one occasion when the washer was overloaded. Hanging them in the sun got those out.

After starting solids, the rinsing or dumping becomes more important; I'm still not sure whether we'd be getting staining without rinsing, but it's stickier, so I don't think they'd get as clean if we didn't spray them off to start with.

Wow, you all are fast. Thanks for the quick answers. My next question... I'm going to wash my CDs for the first time. I've read the CD 101 posts on washing, but just to clarify...do I only put the prefolds and fitteds in the drier and hang the covers to dry?

What type covers are they? I used to put my pul covers in the dryer every 2 or 3 times I washed. The other times I would lay it on top of the dryer to dry. I'm pretty sure pul should be put in the dryer every once in a while to seal the tiny holes that make it breatheable. Pretty sure I butchered that explanation and someone will have to come clean up my mess.

What she said. :)

For the PUL covers, if there was no poop on it, I would rinse them off and hang them to dry for the next changing.
