Sean has rarely had diaper rashes and when he has had them, a little triple paste will usually clear things up overnight. He's had a red bottom for several days now and the triple paste isn't working like it usually does. I've also tried the CVS brand vitamin A&D ointment with lanolin that has also been good in the past. We've done some naked time too, but that hasn't helped much either.

I'm beginning to wonder if he has a yeast diaper rash, though it doesn't like quite as bad as the pic on the Dr. Sears' site. We gave him some acidopholous in apple sauce this afternoon and I wondered if acidophlous powder can be applied to his bottom. I know that when nursing moms and babies have thrush, it is sometimes
recommended to apply acidopholous powder to the mom's nipples. Also, what about the OTC anti-fungal creams (Lamisal AT)? Can those be applied to a baby's bottom?

TIA!

If Sean's rash looks somewhat spotty/bumpy, then it's likely yeast. Kaya gets it from time to time and I just use OTC Clotrimazole (anti-fungal cream). My pede said it was just fine to use stuff like that, though if the yeast was particularly stubborn, I might need prescription stuff (never have, though). I do add acidophilous to Kaya's yogurt, so I think that probably helps. Now that you mention it, I am intrigued by the thought of adding acidophilous to yeasty rash, but I've never known anyone to do that. Maybe someone here has?

When we're in the middle of a yeast rash, I use the clotrimazole maybe three times a day (when she wakes in the morning, before or after her nap, and before bedtime), I avoid any steroidal creams (helps yeast grow), and I leave her diaperless or coverless for much of the day. And yes, baking soda baths.

Good luck! I hope Sean's rash goes away soon!

i agree with eileen. i think that many publications make it seem like a yeast rash looks gawd awful. that hasn't been the case in my experience. try the otc yeast meds.

Thanks, ladies. It's starting to look a bit better. He's been eating yogurt and acidopholous and we've been putting the OTC antifungal stuff on his bottom, then covering it with triple paste. Seems to be working. I haven't put any acidopholous on his bottom yet, but if it doesn't clear up soon, I might try it. I did find a mention of doing this somewhere online, but I have lost the site. Couldn't hurt, I suppose.
