I'm not really sure what is going on. I always look in the washing machine to see if the water is sudsing, and if there is none or virtually none, I stop. This is after 1 pre-wash in cold and 2 full hot/cold cycles with an second rinse. However, everytime I start a new load, before I even add detergent, there are TONS of suds. Also, DD's diaper was stinking to high heaven today, so I think there must be some detergent buildup again. Argh. I honestly just barely fill the bottom of the cap, using Method laundry stuff. Should I change detergents? More rinses? What? I'm completely at a loss.

I do spray all our poopy dipes with Zout. Could that cause sudsing?

TIA-

Hmm...are you sure it's suds and not air bubbles?

The other thing is, if you have hard water, you may want to consider washing your diapers with Calgon. I tend to use that every time I wash the diapers.

I also assume you use detergent only in the first hot/cold cycle? How much do you use and do you think you have hard or soft water?

We have a recently re-filled water softener, so it should be pretty soft. I only add detergent in the first wash (not the pre-wash). I'm just barely covering the bottom of the cap with detergent.

And I'm pretty sure it's suds. They are very white.

I had this sudsing problem when I washed my diapers at my parents' house. They have a front loader and a water softener, so their water is very soft. I found that if I used enough detergent to cover the bottom of the cap, sometimes I would get the over sudsing. But if I used maybe a tablespoon, it was fine. I didn't realize a water softener could make such a difference, but if you just refilled the water softener, that could be why you're seeing such a difference.
