My 3 month old DD has been having very liquidy- I mean almost NO "seeds"- poops for the past 5-10 days, before that she was having very runny with some seed poop for about 10 days...and before that her poops were much more the 'normal' excl. BF baby poop (somewhat wet with mustardy plops). Mucous has been present for the past 20 days, kinda off and on, although the past few days she has really stringy globs instead of the expected 'plops' of poop.

The ped said that as long as she is happy, eating well, and gaining weight (all of which she is) that I shouldn't worry, and that I should just watch what I eat (so I've been cutting things out of my diet). HOWEVER, so many of the boards have told me that mucous is NOT normal and that I should have it checked out. 3 different peds at the office said not to worry and have even seen her but they don't seem to "get" my worry about the diarrhea-like poop and esp. mucous.

What should I do? Does anyone have any words of comfort/advice for this new mom?!?!!?! Thank you!

Wish I had some good advice. The only time my son ever had mucousy poops was when I had to go on an antibiotic when I got one of my wisdom teeth removed. And as soon as I stopped taking it, the mucosy part went away once it was out of my system. Now, I will say that both the Ped and my mother said it wasn't a problem and was just because of the antibiotic, so I didn't worry. He did almost always have very liquidy poops when he was really young, though. Is there anything new that you might have introduced recently? Foods, medicines, or anything? Wish I had some good advice or concrete info!

Sounds like it could be one of a few different things... Something in your diet is the first thing that comes to my mind. Also... maybe a little tummy bug. OR a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance possibly.

There are a few things you can try... Make sure that he's nursing long enough on each breast to get to the "hindmilk". If they are just gettting the foremilk they tend to have more green, runny explosive poops.

My third baby was dairy sensitive, and I cut out all dairy for about 6 months. It was hard, but I lost all my baby weight in no time flat with no pizza :)

Another thing you could try is going to the health store, they usually have acidophilis in powder form for babies. You could mix just a little tiny bit with some breast milk and giving it to baby ... maybe in a dropper if he won't take a bottle. Acidophilis is always my first line of defense if anyone has a messy digestive thing going on... it normalizes the good bacteria in the digestive tract.

Good Luck! I know it's hard to be a detective with this sort of thing since the results aren't immediately apparent!

OHMIGOSH!!! i was going to post about the exact same poop!!! dylan has had diarrhea for 10 days! the ped said if he is not better by monday, we will need to check him for parasites. i think he had poop like this when he was under 3 months, too. i kept trying to eliminate things from my diet and never could figure it out. it eventually got more normal. but it has never looked like the mustard/seedy BF baby poop that schuyler had. he is totally happy and nurses like normal... but i can't take him to mother's morning out and his bottom is now getting rashy... sigh... i am going to read responses now. and if i find out anything new on monday, i will let you know.

The only time Kaya had poop like that, the doctor told me it was likely she was having difficulty digesting proteins, quite possibly from dairy, so he had me cut out all dairy. After a week, things got better and after two weeks, she stopped having the mucousy poop. I think I did spot blood once, though, which is what made me take her to the pede. Cutting out dairy is not easy, but it can definitely be done. It usually takes 2 weeks to get it completely out of your system, though, especially if you've previously been eating a lot of it. Which foods have you been eating?
