View Full Version : How do I make the sores go away?

A month or so ago, DS got a rash/fungus thing. It's totally cleared up, exept for the 2 little sores on his bum. He's not bothered by them, but I am. We do naked time and he naps in just a prefold, but it's not doing it. I'm at a loss as to what to try next.

Hmm...have you tried something like lansinoh? When Kaya gets cuts or scrapes, I'll put lansinoh on it and it seems to help a lot. Maybe something along those lines might make a difference?

I'm up for most anything, but am hesitant for Lansinoh. I'm allergic to lanolin (and hense most wool), and that's why I don't use wool for DS. I don't know if he's allergic or not. What part of the Lansinoh helps? Is it the ingredients or the water barrier (if there is one)? I've tried vaseline, thinking it would keep the area protected somewhat. I've tried vaseline on little gauze squares to keep it loosely covered.

I was going to suggest something called Bag Balm, which my Mom uses for all sorts of wounds (both bovine and human) on the farm, but it's got lanolin in it, so may not work.

The product's website is: http://www.bagbalm.com, and there are ingredients listed at http://www.drugstore.com/qxp88470_333181_sespider/vermonts_original_bag_balm/protective_ointment.htm

Also, if you are okay with the idea of using baby powder, that might help to give the sores a dry surface, which will help them to heal. DS had a couple of rash sores and between the powder (every other time, Burt's Bees ointment, and naked time, they healed in a little less than a week.

When in doubt, there is always breastmilk! I've not tried it on rashes, but it works on so many other things that it may be worth a try if you are breastfeeding. :)

Yes, if lanolin is not an option, then I would sugest breastmilk. You might be able to use aquaphor as a barrier afterwards. Are you using fleece liners to also help the area remain dry?

I'm no longer BFing. I wonder if I could get anything if I tried.

I'm currently not using fleece. I was investigating whether that was hurting the healing or what. It doesn't seem to make a big difference, because I am changing him every hour during the day. Fleece at night still.

I'll give the powder a try. I've been a bit light on ointments because I wasn't sure they should be "inside" the skin, if you know what I mean. But, I'll give the Burt's Bees a try, too.

Oops, I had forgotten you had weaned already. Well, I'm not sure how pg affects how your breasts will be, but I weaned Kaya from my left side at around 12-13 months and here we are at 19.5 months and if I squeeze gently, I can get a little out. But again, I'm not sure how that would work with pregnancy (like it might be painful or dangerous?).

But if you have aquaphor, I've always found that to be a good barrier and I've used it on her red skin on her face when she's had a lot of drooling, etc. That might help.

Ah yes, if lanolin, BM, or regular rash cream are not doing the trick, we will often use neosporin and that will do the trick. I try not to use it too much because of the whole overuse of antibiotics, but I won't hesitate to use it if other things don't work.

Poor Dylan and Andrew! I hope they are both rash-free soon! And Liza, I hope you figure out Dylan's diarrhea soon!

Thanks. I'll give that a try today. This is so frustrating!

ITA with Neosporin, or get a prescription for Bactroban from your ped.
