My DD is 9 months old and we just bought her a little botty chair. We want to start getting her used to the idea of going potty. My goal is to have her out of dipes when she is 18 months old. I know my Mom toilet trained by 18 months and my cousin's babies were all out of dipes by their second birthdays.

My famils if from S. America and there it is VERY uncommon to find kids older than 2 in dipes. My Mom said to run the faucet really low and make a shhhh sound after meals and when she wakes up in the AM. I know she usually poops w/in 1/2 an hour of waking up. I can't tell, though, when she pees. Do you have any hints about what signs to look for or when the best times would be to put her on her potty?

TIA,
Lauren

You can check out my thread on ECing further down the page for some info on how I did it. I think the easiest way to figure out when she pees and what signals she gives that she has to pee is to take her to the bathroom every hour for a week or two. That will let you get an idea of what her peeing schedule is. My DS had certain times of the day when he went twice in an hour and other times of the day when he would wait 2-3 hours to pee.
Is your DD is cloth diapers? If so, I would just go coverless at home, so you know right away if she wets. If you're using sposies, you might want to get a few cloth dipes to use for a few weeks while you figure out how often she's going. Or, the easiest way is to go diaperless and just try to keep her on surfaces that are easy to clean up. Once you've figured out her cues for peeing, and her schedule, you can go back to whatever dipes you're using. My DS used to fuss when he had to pee. Later, he would pause while he was playing. By one, he would tell me when he had to go.
Good luck!

Sounds like you are talking about EC. Here is an excellent site to get started. http://www.diaperfreebaby.org/ and an article about late starters http://www.white-boucke.com/reviews/latestarters.html

Also, here is a good store for supplies. The little potties are really cheap if you need more. http://www.theecstore.com/ I have a friend whose daughter is 13 months and completely potty trained and wears panties. She did EC from birth though. She keeps the little potty in the trunk of her car. If they are out at a mall or something she just hold the baby over a big toilet. If that scares your DD then you could buy a fold up potty for the diaper bag.

eta: If you google elmination communication you'll come up with lots of good sites.
