Thanks to all of your help, I researched and decided to try Fuzzibunz. I'm leaning towards starting out with a package of 6 with the free inserts from Cotton Babies ($87). For night time, I think we need some heavy-duty wetter inserts. If we use a regular disposable, ds wakes up in a lake. He only stays dry with Huggies Overnights. So should I get 1 "Hemp Babies Bigger Weeds" for $6? Should I get more than 6 FB's to start?

DS is about 31 lbs and 36" tall, so should I get the size large that says it goes up to 35+ lbs? In sposies, I've found that he has outgrown a size when he reaches the bottom of the next size bracket. I'd describe his build as solid - not much chub, but he does have thick, muscular thighs. (He's sleeping now, otherwise I would measure his thighs). Does it sound like I should get Large, or the next size?

Also, for color choices, are their pastel colors ok under clothing, or do I have to worry about the baby equivalent of dark underwear with light-colored pants issue?

Do I need to get a special diaper pail right away? We currently put our disposables in a Dekor.

I looked at the mini-shower, but I figured that is something we could get later, right?

Is there anything I'm overlooking?

Thank you!!!

Linda

The Cotton Babies inserts are my faves. They fold over with a snap which is wonderful for our DS because it gives us super-duper absorbancy up front where we need it! If you are using larges, that might not work. I know that we can use the folded over CB with our medium pockets, but we have to unfold them for our larges - DS can go about 2 hours with that. For naps I just use a CB with a prefold - it's VERY BULKY but I only do that when he's sleeping.

I'm sure you can still use a Dekor for you diaper pail - I think Eileen (mudder17) does or did at one point.

We've never had a mini-shower. The waste tends to be more solidified now and it just rolls off into the toilet (way tmi, sorry!)

As for the # of dipes, I wouldn't buy more than 6 until you know that these work for you. It might not be enough to get you through a day and a night (remembering that you change cds more often than sposies), but I'd wait. FBs are always in stock so you can easily purchase more if you find that these are working for you.

Best of luck to you and welcome to the cding world! :)

Hi Linda,

So should I get different inserts?

I use a Dekor (2 of them, actually, because 1 is not enough for a load) with a Snap-EZ pail liner that Ruth made to my measurements. I love it. I used to use the inserts that came with the Dekor and then realized how much I was spending on the inserts when I could just use a reusable pail liner.

You can definitely put off the mini-shower until later, once you figure out whether you want to spray off the poop or if you're okay with swishing, dunking and flushing. I do that when we're on vacation.

For color choices, it's up to you about color choices. I would say that dark colored diapers will show up through light clothing, but probably not a problem vice versa. I have no experience with the Hemp Weeds inserts. For night time, in our Apronstrings Fleece pockets, I stuff with a Zannadu giant MF towel + a Lizajane night time hemp insert. I LOVE Liza's inserts. For a moderate wetter, I would imagine a hemp weeds + cotton babies insert would work very well, but again, I'm not familiar with them.

For sizing, well, FBs seem all over the place, but if your DS is a chunkster, at least in the thighs, I would suspect you'd want large ones. At 23.5 pounds (well, actually, even at 18 pounds), Kaya was too big for the mediums (she also has chunky thighs) and while the PT's fit, it didn't have much room to grow at all. Honestly, FBs never did fit her that well. However, what I would suggest is that you maybe order one large (I would order from Lilbunz since she has free shipping, although she doesn't have free inserts, but what about Kelly's Closet? She also had free shipping last I heard and hers currently come with inserts (again, last I heard))...yikes too many parentheses! I'd order one large and see how it fits your DS before ordering more. Otherwise you'll just have a bunch of diapers you'll need to return or sell off.

Honestly, I like the CB inserts the most as far as absorbancy goes. With any other inserts we use, I have to use two or a combo of micro and hemp. The key is remembering to change the little buggers more often in cloth - you just can't go as long as you can in a sposie. I haven't used FBs in a while (no particular reason - we just outgrew the smalls and I had others I liked just as well). Right now we use mostly Daisy Doodles AIOs, Swaddlebees (they have their own inserts), and Happy Heinys with CBs and a prefold for sleeping. Before you invest too much in any one product, try it out and see what you like about it and what you don't. It took me awhile to get our "system" down so be patient with yourself and your dipes :)

I don't know about the Hemp Babies Bigger Weeds inserts, as we've never tried them. Based on what I've read around here, my recommendation (like Eileen suggested) would be a Lizajane nighttime insert. I think some people have good success using a couple large Joeybunz? I'm not sure, because for nights we use fitteds and an Aristocrat.

You might want to experiment with sizes before buying a bunch of any diaper. If I were you I'd try a large FB, the next size up FB, and some other pockets- you might find that a different type works better for you. Some others to consider are Snap EZ, Swaddlebees, Wonderoos and Happy Heineys. (Baby Blankets and PT FB are better for skinnier babies, I hear).

Or, you could get a package of several large FBs (save money in bulk) and if they aren't working out for you sell them on SWAP. That way things are very simple right in the beginning.

As far as colors go, I guess it depends on the clothes. We've not had a problem with the dark colored dipes showing through, but littleman doesn't have many light colored pants/shorts. Khakis are as light as it gets, and the dipe doesn't show through them. Baby G's printed diaper covers sometimes show through his light-colored sleepers or knit pants, but I don't really mind.

No, no need to get a special pail. A dekor will work fine, or you can use any old flip-top trash pail. Reusable liners are great, but if you want plain old trash bags will do the trick at first.

Sure, wait on the sprayer! Some babies make poop that rolls right off the diaper, especially fleece or suedecloth lined diapers (like pockets). And some people find they don't mind dunking and swishing at all, if that's necessary.

Ok, you ladies have convinced me to check out some other options and to try 1 of each. I'm off to do some more research. This is a completely foreign language for me!

Is the MF in "Zannadu giant MF towel" Microfiber? If so, is it like a plain old microfiber dust towel? I didn't realize those were absorbent.

Thanks again for the assistance!

You've convinced me to look into other types besides FB. I'm off to check them out. Thanks!

Yes, MF is microfiber and it's basically the same material as the MF towels you get from the automotive section. The Zannadu one is thicker and higher quality though. And much bigger. They don't absorb quickly, but they absorb a lot. Hemp absorbs more quickly, but by weight MF MIGHT be more absorbent. In any case, the combo of the two seems to work really well for heavy and moderate wetters.
