Pail Pal turned brown?

I got a Pail Pal and poked holes in the plastic wrap to let the scent out, then taped the edge of the wrap in the diaper pail. After about two weeks, the pail pal turned brown. Why? Is it mold? I used a pail pal once before, albeit I took it out of the plastic wrap, and it did not turn brown.

It may be what it's exposed to. I've used them in my garbage can and sometimes it turns brown and sometimes it doesn't. I don't think it's mold, though. At least it doesn't look like it to me. I could be a pH issue maybe?
