Ok, I was going to buy a package, but have read so much about people being disappointed with their Kissaluvs. So, I'm customizing my stash...
12 infant PF's
12 preemie PF's
12 fitteds
So, here are our desires in a fitted
1) pretty easy to obtain -- I'm no hyena, and I'll need at least 12 before February.
2) Absorbent enough
3) Won't break the bank. We are on somewhat of a budget.
Has anyone tried the ME Sandys on a newborn? If so, do the smalls work for most newborns or should I get the X-smalls? I also have been eyeing Sunflower Derrieres http://www.sunflowerderrieres.com/index.htm
for some cute dyed prefolds. Has anyone tried their fitteds?
Any suggestions and where to get them would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I have a sunflowerderriere AIO that I have been happy with hopefully someone else can let you know about the fitteds.

I have a small collection of nb/sm fitteds ( in anticipation of the next baby) http://www.muttaqinbaby.com/ --has both sized diapers and 3step rise, http://sugarplumbaby.com/
http://www.tallulahbaby.com/index.php/action/category/id/5/ ( I have a couple of her large fitteds (quality work) ), http://www.hillbillybunny.com/shop/, http://www.thecalicobaby.com/store/Default.asp ( she does very nice AIO&fleece covers also)

If you have the time you can watch for "seconds" they usually have minor serging flaws ( some of which I cant find) good luck

I bought seconds from Kissaluvs, so that made it a bit more affordable. I really like the cuteness of the Kissaluvs, but you're right, they aren't very absorbant. I didn't use mine all that much since DD and I have had a nasty case of thrush since she was born and I was advised to stick with sposies till we were cured. Anyway, in my opinion, if you're on a budget, prefolds are the way to go. They aren't as cute and there is a little learning curve with the Snappi, but they fit longer and can be used for a ton of other things than just a diaper - burp rag, diaper stuffer/doubler, etc.

For the most part, I would stick to prefolds and maybe have 6-8 fitted for nights and outings. But you can actually get by without the fitteds if you wish.

I have one Sunflower Derrieres fitted, but it was a size 2 fitted, so I have no idea what the newborns would be like. In any case, for my super soaker, I found it to be bulky. I got organic cotton and it turns out that hemp works much better for my super soaker. Hey, anyone want a SD fitted + AIO shell? I've only used it once or twice. ;)

Let me think about your other criteria:
My favorite fitted that is actually obtainable is Bijou Baby Gear. It's always difficult to tell from her site, so I tend to e-mail her when I want to get something. I would e-mail her and tell her that you'd like to get newborns or smalls (you can get her advice, but based on my experience with her mediums and larges, the sizings are generous and overlapping, if that makes any sense) of the basic hemp and ask her what are the chances she might stock before February. My guess is that she might do it for you as a custom. She's super nice, so it's definitely worth e-mailing her about. I would ask for the extra doubler. These diapers are absorbent, trim, and dry quickly (no sewn in soakers). I'm guessing they'll have a long range of fit as well.

I've never tried the ME Sandys, so I'll bow to others. I think Tarah(?) may have used these before. If you have a big newborn, MEOS may also work, and they are definitely cheap and readily available. You can also often find them on the swaps.

HTH a bit!

I think the Sandies are an excellent alternative to the KLs.I haven't used them myself, though. The fabric has some polyester in it, which some don't like, but I think is worth it for the softness. I did use, and liked, Sugarplum Baby NB dipes, www.sugarplumbaby.com , and I have some Loveybums for a theoretical next baby. I use some Loveybums on my guy now, and I know the NB/SM are going to be great. www.loveybums.com Another option would be Tykies, which I really liked in the medium and large sizes. The flannel ones are plenty for the average NB, I'd think. I'd size up to smalls, though, they run small. www.tykiediapers.com

I would also suggest Righteous Baby FLAMs and FLAG 1's. http://www.righteousbaby.com FLAMs are my favorite fitted for my newborn, and out of all our newborn dipes, I anticipate them lasting the longest size-wise. She lists them as fitting 5-12+ lbs, and I expect we'll be able to use them past 12lbs.

I like http://www.sugarplumbaby.com too - we have one NB-size SPB and it's similar in style to my FLAMs, but it's smaller than a FLAM and will be outgrown earlier. I think on the site she lists the NB size as fitting up to 10lbs.

Most of our stash is Muttaqins, just because they're affordable and readily available and when I bought them I thought they would fit for a long time. I got most of mine for $9-10 a pop - try joining her mailing list for sales/coupon codes. They are very absorbant and give a good fit, and the velour inners are so soft! I definitely prefer them to kissaluvs. They're described as fitting up to approx 15lbs, but I don't think they'll fit that long for us. We're almost on the loosest snaps already. I think they'll fit to about 12 lbs in our case, so about the same as our FLAMs and KL0's.

You could also get some bigger dipes which will last a lot longer. At 3-4 wks, we started using a Loveybums QD Sherpa sz Med (9-22 lbs) and a Righteous Baby FLAG sz 1 (8-18lbs). They're huge on Claire (who I'm guessing is about 10lbs now..? 8.5 at birth), but they work and they're economical in the long run. Even though they're huge, I like them better than prefolds. lol

I'm not a prefold person, but I have a dozen dyed infant CPFs from sunflower derrieres, and the colors are lovely and bright! They make using prefolds more tolerable (at least until the diaper wash is done and my fitteds are clean! lol).

Thanks for all the great ideas so far and keep 'em coming! Just for clarification, I love snappied prefolds, but if I want DH to change some diapers around here, they've got to be fitteds. He just gets too frustrated with snappying tha prefolds. :)
Thanks!

I second getting the sunflowerderriers prefolds. use coupon cod MDC (Im pretty sure thats the code - if not sign up for motheringdotcommune if you arent there already) and you get 10% off. I got 9 dyed prefolds and it was only something like 24$ with shipping. the colors are YUMMY! Im thinking of trying some of her fitteds but havent done my shopping yet.

I also recommend sugarplumbaby like someone else mentioned. Angie (I think thats her name) mentioned that her newborn size fits up to about 12 lbs though I think she only has it listed as 10. I think its pretty accurate because Lilbit fits perfectly in the mediums, and the larges on the crossover snap....so they must have a lot of growing room to them. She also has a code for freeshipping somewhere on MDc...cant remember. She has a hyena cart too and does customs on limited time (I think she is currently expecting her 5th? or just gave birth, cant remeber.)

I know pattynaps are also kind of inexpensive. I have an all flannel one that works well (mine is size medium), but I would totally put a liner in it, flannel inners are hell to get clean!

I cant remember any others at the moment, I havent really seen much, seems the small stuff gets picked up quickly now thatIm looking for it. Heck I was in search for larges high and low a few months ago and couldnt find anything cute now there is oodles of the stuff and no smalls. ARG!

Also, check ebay, or diaper swappers etc, there are a LOT of newborn/small lots of diapers for sale and many of them are in like new condition because they are used for so little a time. Im more a purist and want mostly new things....but thats just me. I have lots of stuff thats used, but want atleast a few new items too for that new little one! Ebay also has a lot of wahm that do selling them, some for even as cheap as 5$ or less a diaper. Heck I know a lot of them are mostly flannel (which is surprisingly absorbant) but when they are changed so frequently in the beginning for as cute as many of them are its kinda worth it! Just make sure there is elastic in the legs to hold everything in, and maybe at the waist and really you cant go too wrong! (especially if you just save them for DHs use)
