View Full Version : I wanna be a fluff girl...

So I got called out in the fluffer thread... and I confess that I could use some advice.

We've been using a mix of PFs and disposables at our house. We were given diaper service for a year as a gift. DH and our caregiver do the majority of the changes. DH has issues with the PFs because of bulk and leaks. He swears that DS cries in a PF because of bulk between the legs. In the past, we folded, Snappi'ed and put a Prowrap, Litewrap, or nylon pants over -- the nylon pants seemed to be the best for leaks, but not great. DS has now grown out of the smaller covers and that's halted our CD experiments.

I've decided that I want to give CDing a fairer try by seeing what the latest in fluffy diapering technology can offer. I am going to cancel the service and sample alternative solutions. To my delight, DH has agreed to try.

I live in a wool-friendly house (I have Eucalan in a soap dispenser ready to go at all times :) ). I am not averse to hemp or microfleece or PUL.

DS is about 17 lbs and 26 or 27 inches. He is long with a slim waist and medium thighs (I think -- not too much comparison). He is an average wetter, though he won't tolerate feeling wet and asks to be changed right away (even in a disposable). He still poops BF poop 4-5 times a day, though it is starting to get more solid.

To make this simple, I am thinking that we could try AIO's for daytime and fitted with (wool?) covers for night. Does this seem like a good starting place? Any thoughts for our situation?

OK, Saccade, get ready for a long post from a mama who is delerious from studying, my neonatology boards are Wednesday.

I'd try pockets, they are nice and versatile. Given your guy's age, you'll get alot of mileage out of stuff you try, Fory wore medium dipes from 3 mo to 10 mo. I'll add some AIOs, too.

Extremly trim pockets with velcro closures: Harleyz www.wahmarama.com . The M/L will fit him. The only annoying thing about these is that the pocket loads in the front of the diaper, so you have to touch a bit of pee to unstuff them. I find the fit worth it. You'd have to buy inserts from Harleyz for these, they have such a narrow crotch.

Old standby: Fuzzibuns, also size M. www.naturalbabies.com or any ol' place. Stuff these with Hemparoo Joeybunz, or microfiber inserts from www.cottonbabies.com . Or microfiber car towels from Target. (would also work in the Harleyz)

Another fave pocket: www.knickernappies.com Loved the disposanots, they fit from 15lbs when I got them to 25lbs.

Oh yeah, and Happy Heinys www.naturalbabies.com and everywhere else. Get the solid colors, more reliable. These are velcro pockets, easy peasy.

www.snap-ez.com - love these, but they are getting a tad spendy. Great dipes, though. I use pocket fitteds (cotton pockets?) from here at night, with wool covers.

AIOS:
very baby www.verybaby.com or Bum-ware www.bum-ware.com Both are exactly like a sposie, except you wash them. Also fairly reasonably priced. A medium/long VB will fit your guy for a LONG time. Ours still fit my 21 month old 30lb 32 inch tall kid, with room to grow.
www.angelwraps.com love these, the mediums are another fit forever size.

For inserts for pockets, I use birdseye flats, some are real dipes, some are crappy Gerber burpcloth dipes, all of them work fine. Two at at time usually needed for naps and two-three for night, one for day. But, my kid is not a huge pee-er.

For nighttime wool covers, you can't go wrong with an Aristocrat. I bought two used larges when Fory outgrew the small at three months, and he's got one on tonight. For velcro wool wraps for night, the wool interlock stretch covers at www.angeldrydiapers.com are cheap and bomb-proof.

I really like the pocket fitteds for night, because they are fleece lined, so the boy stays pretty dry. I have two from Snap-EZ, and three from Harleyz. I found that thick nighttime hemp diapers, in my hands, were incurably prone to stinking. Having pockets and single layer inserts solves the problem.

Good luck and have fun shopping!

dylan is a similar size, but a bit heavier. and schuyler was also long and skinny. so i would recommend fuzzibunz. you shouldn't be getting leaks. if you don't have a heavy wetter and you have to change after one pee, i can't figure out why a prefold would leak. perhaps some of the diaper was hanging out of the cover?

anyhoo-

try medium or petite toddler FBs. the PTs would last longer than the mediums (which would last very long on a skinny guy anyway.)

i have not had success with FBs and one JB. but it is very trim. one JB and one target microfiber towels might work well for you and be trim.

for some reason, i can't get wool covers to work at night. i tried it on schuyler with 8 layers of hemp AND a premium prefold and it leaked straight through the cover. (sugarpeas wool cover.)

rambling. sorry.

Liza, was there any diaper peeking out? Did you lanolize the cover first? Then again, I know Schuyler has this way of holding and holding and then peeing a ton!

ETA: Was the prefold snappi'd? I'm thinking maybe if it wasn't, there could have been gaps and such as he rolled and the pee could have leaked out, rather than through the cover....

Yeah, I am assuming the leaking was due to wicking... but since I'm not the primary changer it's hard to say.

Thanks for the advice!

So, it's Heidi?

Since it was my fluff girl post that "called you out," I just wanted to say welcome to fluffdom. I asked my DH if he knew what a fluff girl was, certain he WOULD know... we've had many conversations about the world of p*rn... and he looked at me, dare I say, cockeyed (Couldn't resist that one ;-).

Anyway, I love pockets, but Tarah covered most of it. If you decide to go that route, angelluvz.com has print pockets for $11 or $12 postage included, which is lower than many others. You'd want a medium. I don't like most of her prints, but there are some winners if you look through all the options. My one caution to you is to ask about cross over tabs before you buy any Bumkins AIO. I don't think they come with the cross-over tabs (at least the cover I just bought doesn't), and you'd need them with a skinny waisted guy.

Yeah, that's me -- we had an internet stalker so I was trying to stay under the radar, but what the heck -- if they stalk and corner me here in the BBB Butts forum, so be it!

Anyhow, thanks for prodding me very nicely in the direction of getting serious about CD...

Sounds like pockets are the highest rung on the CD evolutionary ladder. DH allows as how they sound like a good idea, considering their flexibility. So we may only get a couple AIOs and more pockets (I'll try a few varieties).

One word of warning on the Angelluv pockets--they haven't gotten very good reviews. You may want to check out diaperpin and diaper hyena for reviews, but those I've read have been mixed at best. Funny thing is that I do like her pull-up wool and fleece covers, especially for the $8ppd I got them for.

And one more word about pockets--generally print PUL is more prone to wicking. I also find solids less crunchy. You could also try fleece pockets. Windpro is probably the trimmest of the fleece types. Well, except windbloc, which is very trim, very waterproof, but a bit less breathable (but still more than PUL).

Thanks. I like the idea of fleece pockets. Is Snap-Ez the way to go here?

I have been checking diaperpin -- good to hear you find it accurate.

I did order some PFs to have on hand, and I asked Teresa Smith (granitesmith) to include a sample of the AIO she has, the Comply, and a single Comply liner -- looks like the one review I can find at diaperpin is pretty negative -- I'll let you guys know.

I love my Snap-EZ fleece pocket! It's trim and really well made. Somewhat more affordable is the Apronstrings fleece pocket. I use a large for night time and it works very well. Here's the website:
http://apronstringsbabythings.com/

It may be worth trying one of each to see which you like better. I do like my SEZ more, but it was definitely more than the Apronstrings.

Hmm...actually, I'll have to check my stash, but I may still have one of the Apronstrings on the swap if you want me to check.

That'd be super, Eileen, if you have a minute. Which swap group is this, the general BBB Yahoo! swap or diaperswap or...?

And thanks for the Apronstrings endorsement, Rachel.

I've got an Apronstrings fleece that we also use at night, its OK, but I like the two rows of snaps on the Snap-EZ. Less wing droop.

Actually, all of my apronstrings have two rows of snaps. You can ask her to do that. :) In fact, I was surprised that she'll do front aplix or side snap as well if you ask. I have/had a couple of side-snap as well as front snap, but I don't remember what I've sold and what I still have--I definitely have to check.

Saccade, I'll check on it tomorrow and let you know!

Thanks!

If you (anyone) can stand one more question, why side vs front snaps vs Aplix? I imagine that with Aplix you have to be sure to fasten before washing, but easier for neophytes... Are side snaps better because DC are less likely to play with them?

Well, there's this thing called wing droop, which all front snap dipes with one row of snaps are prone to, to some degree or another. It is particularly pernicious when you're using the tightest snap settings. Basically, the dipe is held in place in the very front, and the sides slip down, making leaks more likely, and just looking weird. Worse with a mobile-age baby, of course. The second set of snaps ameliorates this. Side snap diapers always have two rows of snaps, and the wings go behind the front, so no drooping. Also, better for very chubby thighed babies, since you can leave the legs looser, and keep the waist snug.

My DS can undo any diaper, if he's got a mind to. Sadly.

mudder17

Exactly. Front velcro, if it's wide enough, is also pretty good about eliminating wing droop. Our Angeldry wool cover is a good example of this.
