View Full Version : A humble tip of my own re: wipes and solution

Well, most of you mamas are so savvy that I'm sure you know this one, but I felt quite clever for figuring it out on my own.

I wasn't very comfortable with the idea of having all my wipes sitting around in a solution all the time; I guess I was leery of mold/funk issues. I'm sure that's not really an issue since I go through all my wipes within a couple of days, but anyway...

What I do is put my wipes (which are mostly cheapo baby washcloths, I like the plain Gerber ones best) folded in half in a stack in a recycled commercial wipes tub. I keep my wipes solution in the peri bottles that they gave me at the hospital (but they leak, so next time I buy a bottle of water with the squirt top, I'm going to save the bottle). When changing time comes, I just squirt the top wipe in the stack, and use it for wiping. That way, the other ones don't sit around wet. I like the peri bottle/squirt water bottle better than a normal spray bottle, because you can get the wipe wetter, faster.

So there you have it! I've now crossed the threshhold and have finally contributed something!

Woohoo! That's actually a great tip. I did use the peri bottle for the longest time, but I would wet a wipe as I went along, but the wipe would be on the floor or in my hands and yes, they would wet through. It makes so much sense for the wipes to be in a stack and to just wet them one at a time, but let the excess go on the wipes below. :)

If you like the peri bottle but don't like that it leaks, use an old dishwashing soap bottle. I got one that has a tighter "snap" so that DD can't open it easily (it was a lavender scented palmolive bottle) and it works wonderfully well. Like you, I don't like the spray bottle because it doesn't wet the wipe fast enough.

Oh, dishwashing soap bottle---of COURSE! Yay, now I don't have to go buy a bottle of water. :)

Thanks for the tip! This will be very helpful for me as I am coverting to all cloth wipes for DD shortly. I have them, I just don't use them, and I didn't like the spray bottle technique. And I have decided that I really don't like the new Costco wipes. (I gave them a chance I really did!) So off to the cloth wipes we go!

I think that's a great idea. What do you use for wipes solution? I've just been using water, but would like to try making a solution with lavender or apricot oil. How long does your solution keep? Do you use tap water or distilled water? Sorry, I guess that's a bunch of questions. :)

Obviously, you're not the first to ask this question. :) Personally, I like the Honey Chunks better than the Baby Bits, but I think when I run out, I may try one of the recipes that these ladies have given me, just because I have a bunch of essential oils (including apricot oil) and would like to try it out. :D

Great idea! We used a system this until someone gave us a wipe warmer. Now we fill the wipe warmer with water and baby bits and just dip the wipes into the wipe warmer.

I use Baby Bits with tap water. I dilute it quite a bit, so now after 6 months we are only about halfway through our first package!

Speaking of wipes---I'm getting so I just can't stand commercial wipes. I've been taking them in the diaper bag because they're a bit more convenient than cloth ones (though now that I think about it they're not THAT much more convenient), but they are just so slimy and I can never seem to get DS's bottom dry after using them---who has time to stand around in a restaurant bathroom fanning their kid's butt? Since he is rash-prone, I'm thinking of ditching 'em.

That really is a good idea! I could have made good use of it if I had started CDing DD earlier.

Now that she's older and I generally just use wipes for poopy diapers, I use a very primitive technique that works for us. Let me say first that DD went through a difficult-to-diaper stage so I've tried to do whatever I can to minimize the "trauma" of the diaper change! I noticed that she'd get really squirmy when I was using cloth wipes on her and then finally figured out that the wipe was just too cold for her comfort. Now, when DD has a poopy diaper, I'll wet several wipes with warm water from the faucet and then throw them in a ziplock bag to take with me to the changing area. If I don't use all the wipes I warmed, the unused wipes stay in the ziplock and then I just rewarm/rewet them with the next batch I use. It works pretty well for us and is super cheap, uh, economical! :)

Thanks for the great idea. I was having trouble wetting my wipes without making a huge mess!!
I actually just bought a wipes warmer and DD LOVES her warm wipes! I am concerned with leaving the warm, wet wipes there for too long. I used one honey chunk dissolved in two cups of distilled water...so how long can this batch of wipes last? We're not going through very many a day.

Thanks for any info!
