I'm in search of a potty for DS (I'd like to have one on hand when we start toilet training). Can you recommend your child's? What brand is it? What do you like about it? Anything you don't like? TIA!

We have both the Baby Bjorn potties and a hand-me-down Safety 1st.

The Bjorn potties rock! The smaller one is all one piece. I like this one slightly less because is is not always as easy to empty and no rubber bottom, but generally easy to empty, easy to clean. Very small, so even the littlest of kids can get on and off easily. The larger Bjorn has an insert piece that you take out to empty. It is super easy to empty and clean. The high back on it seems to give DS1 a sense of security and it is very stable with a rubber grip bottom. Bjorn potties:

The Safety 1st one sucks. It has a drawer style cup, with little plastic clips that just are a pain. It always spills when you try to get it out and has so many nooks and crannys that it is impossible to clean. Here is the one we have, but slightly different, probably older: http://www.safety1st.com/product.asp?productID=110

Yep, I agree that the safety 1st one sucks. If you want something similar, Graco makes a soft-seat one with a bowl and an insert and the soft-seat can go on a regular potty. Kaya likes that one a lot and also uses it as a stepstool.

This is basically the one we have:

We have two of the Target knockoffs of the little Bjorn potty. All one piece, very small, and cheap, but that's all we ever needed.

DS started using his occasionally around 21 months or so (I think?) to pee. We started w/ a small one to see how he'd take to it before shelling out more money, and that's all we ended up using.

I eventually got a 2nd, which we keep in the back of our minivan. We use it on long trips (not while driving ;) ) and sometimes when out and about, before going into a store, etc.

The name is something like Baby JouJou or something along those lines. They come in a salmony red, a bright/apple green kind of color, white, and maybe light blue? 6.99 or so, which is a little cheaper than the similar little Bjorn.

At 2.5 he sometimes uses the little potty, often uses the regular toilet, and only occasionally a seat insert (we have a First Years I think, which is not great, but he uses it so rarely I don't really care that much).

We have a bjorn, fisherprice "throne" and a walmart variety. He used none of them. Nathan much prefered the big toilet but what gave us the "push" was buying the Peter Potty urinal ( that will only work for boys LOL).
Now at the ripe old age of 2yr9mo we put away all potty chairs and rings and are exclusive on the toilet both pee and poo

yeah, we have the sucky safety 1st potty, and was going to get the peter potty (i still want it) but charlie is pretty good at just the big potty, so i figure, when ds2 gets a bit older i will definately get the peter potty.

We started with the (one piece) Baby Bjorn potty when DD was young (One-ish as your child is). It was a good size for her then. She looks a bit big on it now at 2, but she still sits on it and seems to like it. The thing I like about it is that it doesn't have an insert -- so there's no part to get stuck to her bum and nothing for her to play with/pull out/dump.

I have the old version of the large Baby-bjorn. I got it at a garage sale for $4, but like it some much I would pay full price for a new one if I had to. I was looking to buy one new, when I stumbled on the old at a grage sale.

DD is 3 and still uses it outside when she is swimming. If she comes inside she slips and falls on the tile floors.

You can also use produce/goodgrocery bags in the insert part for in the car..great for emergency potty. Then, you just find the trash, and throw the bag in with no mess to clean up.
