Does anyone know where I can get a cute longies pattern (knit or crochet - doesn't matter)? I have an urge to knit again, and my mom wants to help out too. Neither one of us has actually made any soakers or longies. I would love to find a pattern that has some details/unique stitches. I saw a gorgeous longie Jessica made, but I can't find the original post.

Thanks!

I would start with something simple and cheap yarn to make sure you get the sizing right.

The Aubrey Doodle Pants are what I use:

It is not a detailed or fancy pattern, but you can add to it as much as you want.

For sizing, when I use sz 5 needles and Lion Brand Fisherman's wool, I get the following sizes: 88 st = 3 mos, 104 = 12 mos, 112 = 2T (I haven't made any other sizes yet).

The pattern is for a wider leg pant, but if you wanted them to be more fitted, just decrease in the legs a bit after you knit the first couple of rounds. I do an elastic waistband using the technique from the cuffs in this pattern:

You can finish the cuffs any number of ways. I picked up a book from the library called "Knitting on the Edge" that has wonderful edge patterns.

Here are some shorts I made with this pattern:

Here are some longies I am working on:

The one on the left is Fisherman's wool with Cascade 220 for the ribbed cuffs, size around 3 mos (I have to find a 3 mo to try it on :-) ). The one on the right is Cascade 220 with a hemmed cuff, size 12 mos. I haven't completely finished either one (weaving in ends, elastic on the gray pair), but you can get an idea. On the small ones I decreased around 6 st. total from halfway down the leg to the ribbing. You could add decorative edges, a line of lacework down the outside edges, duplicate stitch embroidery, etc.

HTH!

Thanks, that definitely helps! That knitty cargo pants pattern is cute!!!

I love detailed and fancy patterns because they keep me from getting bored. :) That's why I haven't finished an adult sized item in a looooong time. I basically have been making baby hats for all my friends' little girls this summer. I'm ready for something a little more challenging!

I have another question. Where do you get your knitting supplies? I have one of those Denise interchangeable knitting needles, but I need DPN in various sizes. Where do you purchase your supplies? It has been ages since I bought any, and I can't remember where I got them originally.

Needles are usually at JoAnn, Michael's or Hobby Lobby. They are cheaper than a Local Yarn Shop (LYS). If I can't find the size/type I want there, then I will go to the LYS. I prefer wood or bamboo, and there are usually at least some of the sizes at those stores. I use a 16" circ. for the body of the pants and then DPN for the legs. You can also use two circulars or do Magic Loop for the legs.

Yarn varies. For Fisherman's Wool I go to JoAnn with a coupon. You can make a couple pair of pants out of one skein which is around $5-6 with a coupon. There are also some decent wool yarns there or any of those stores. If I want slightly better stuff, it is off to the LYS for Cascade 220 or another worsted weight wool.

Thanks again. I've picked up crochet hooks at Michaels, but I have never seen DPNs there (or at any other store for that matter). I have one size from Little Turtle Knits.

Ah, I never thought about using two circulars. Heck, I never heard of Magic Loop. I just googled it. Very cool! My mom just shows me the basic stitches. I don't think she knows the knitting terms.

Thanks for tip on the library. I just put that book on hold!
