DD is sort of self potty training.....if you can call it that....here's what she's doing (17 mos. old)

DD: (stops playing and looks at mommy) Peepee. (grabs her crotch)
Mommy: let's go pee pee on the potty!
DD: (runs to the bathroom)
Mommy: ok here we go (sets DD on potty)
DD: (standing up) Noooooooo.....

What the heck!?!?!? She's doing it with poo poo, too! but with poo poo we get much more warning. She stops, looks at me, and says "poopy" and then proceeds to bend down and poop! I definitely have time to get her to the bathroom with that one, but when she sits down on the potty she freaks out and wants to stand back up....i think she must be scared...What to do??? I'm not in a hurry to have her potty trained, but it seems like if she's giving me the signal, why not take her to the potty? she seems so interested in the process, but not the execution. Anyone have a DC who acted similarly?

Absolutely, DD did this at about her age. Though she is not even interested now, there was a good four months where she wanted to sit on the potty and would tell me when she had to go, but nothing actually wound up in the potty.

Something I did to help with the fear of the potty was showing her how to flush and once she was strong enough, have her flush the toilet after I dump her poop. It has pretty much eradicated her fear of the potty. She loves to wash her hands too, and since that always comes after flushing she gets very excited.

good idea! the hand washing will definitely be a draw! i'm not in a hurry, but i want to take advantage of the progress she's making on her own!

how about a little potty? i babysat a kid when i was in college who was terrified of the potty. he thought he would get flushed down!!!

dylan has started to pee in the potty (he is 20 months) and it is definitely easier on the potty insert seat than on the big potty. he will use the big potty now, but at first, he was just too worried about falling in! i haven't even pulled out the little potty for hiim yet. i think it will be a big incentive for him because he will be able to walk over to it and sit down.

(fwiw, i am not "trying" to potty train him. he is doing the same thing his brother did- started peeing on the potty around 19 months when he needed to go. as in, he can concentrate and make pee come out. but if he doesn't need to go, he will try, but nothing happens. so he can pee on command, but he can't hold it or tell me when he needs to go. frankly, he doesn't really talk. so he doesn't actually tell me anything! lol! but when i ask if he needs to go pee pee on the potty, he nods his head and says, "ummm hmmmmmmmm.")
