View Full Version : DD Throwing a Fit During Diaper Change

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this post -- so someone please let me know if it isn't.

DD is 14 months old - generally a happy, easy going child. During the last couple of weeks she has started making diaper changing a HUGE ordeal. I just want to know if we are normal! She is throwing an all out fit during diaper changes - crying, turning over, trying to get off the changing table, etc. I've given her a toy or lovie to play with -- but nothing is working. She makes the process twice as long and complicated and it's becoming frustrating.

I'm don't know all the details of how her daycare handles diaper changing, but I feel sure her teacher would have said something if she is acting this bad.

Any ideas, suggestions, help?

totally normal and also a phase. dylan was a nightmare to change and then a dream. he is becoming a nightmare again on occasion, but i expect him to PT at some point, so i am not too stressed. i expect maybe 4 more months in diapers.

the last resort i had to use with my first DS at that phase was changing him on the floor while kneeling over him- one knee on either side and facing upside down (so i was looking at his feet, not his head.)

we are going through this as well....usually finding something interesting enough for her to play with works....but sometimes it doesn't. if you're using sposies you can try the easy ups from pampers, though i don't think they're THAT much easier...i also do a running goofy commentary now during changes now....

i'm sorry you're dealing with this...it's pretty frustrating!

Thank you so much for the advice and encouragement. I'm hoping it's just a phase and a short one!!

Yep, we've got the same thing here! I try to find something really new and different (tube of Balmex, her brush, a diaper, a wipe, etc) for her to play with. That works sometimes. Most of the time, its just frustrating. Hopefully both will outgrow it soon!

DS did the same for about two months but now is starting to cooperate happily, except I still haven't been able to get him to stop touching his you-know-what in the middle of chaning him. Thank goodness DS only poops two-three times a week.

Hang in there and all I can say when it's this bad is to be quick and that it's a normal phase!

Yep, Kaya went through phases for this. In the first stage, it was that she wanted to be on her tummy, so I learned to put on her prefolds backwards. It was just much easier and a lot less stressful. Later, it was that she wanted to crawl away, so we just firmly did the change with distractions if she was cooperative and without if she wasn't and just got it over with. When she was older, we just did a lot of standing diaper changes. Now, she does protest when we want to take off her night diaper, but DH just tells her it'll be over quickly and firmly keeps her down. She's basically learned that struggling doesn't help, so even if she verbally protests, she'll let him change her diaper and put on her underwear.

The baby wrangling gets old fast doesn't it? We too do face-down changes and standing changes. Sometimes he cooperates, sometimes it takes two of us or if by myself, I do what LizaJane does and basically sit on him (not really, but kindof).

I explain why we do diaper changes (basic, diaper is wet, get a new one on so you can go play, etc.) and that works sometimes too, but DS is older than OP's DC.

eta: DS does not like the pull-up diapers and runs away. Sometimes, when desperate, I'll pull one out and try to put one of those on, and when he protests ask if he wants the normal type and then he lets me put it on.

We do sposies because DS cries when I try to put on the bumGenius or prefolds (and that makes me cry...)

Yep, we've been through it as well and it still happens here on occasion. I've become a pro at putting on dipes backwards (while DS is on his tummy or standing facing the wall). We also did pull ups/easy ups for a few months. We tried so many things, it just became one of those "pick your battles" things.

LOL, I just did the angel/newspaper fold and snappi'd in the back. I didn't know if it would work when I first tried it, but lo and behold, it did! So yes, I just pretended she as face up and folded it normally. I never was very successful with the bikini twist.

so funny you posted about this fold. I started doing it backwards when he would throw fits and try to crawl away. I do the same thing and it holds just as well if not better!
