Our son is 21 months old and a FANTASTIC night time sleeper. He goes to bed around 7:30pm and sleeps until about 8:00am each day through the night without waking.

Now that he's getting bigger we've been having blowouts every night and we have to strip his crib bedding and pretty much wash him down every morning when he wakes up (at least it doesn't wake him up but then again maybe he'd sleep 13 hours if he wasn't soaked every morning). It's a heckuva a way to start the day. :(

We use size 5 Pampers Cruisers during the day and the Pampers Baby Dry (hah!) for night time.

Can anyone offer any suggestions on something that will handle all that pee for a close to 12 hour sleep? I swear that morning diaper must weight 3-4 pounds every day.

Thanks in advance.

I am definitely not an expert but how about trying your regular diaper with a diaper cover over it? Or maybe even the heavier duty night time diapers? You could always double diaper too.

Hmmmm... even though I'm extremely bitter about how well your son sleeps - I will still answer the question! :-)

I'm a big fan of Huggies Supreme (red package) - maybe go to a size 6 instead of 5. Not sure if that will hold all that pee - like pp said, perhaps you could double up or use some type of cover.

Thank you for the replies - I never knew there was such a thing as a diaper cover. Anyone got a link to one? I'll check out the Huggies too!

We had the same problem with our 12 month old son. He would sleep from about 7:00 PM until 6:00 AM or so and would be soaked by the time he got up in the morning. He was wearing Huggies Overnight diapers. We started using diaper covers for cloth diapers which helped for a while but then he started leaking out the sides and top of these too.

Now we have started lining his Overnight diapers with a feminine napkin with a pretty high absorbency (we went up one size diaper to accomodate this). Voila -- no more wet baby in the morning. We have successfully done this for several weeks and he has been dry as a bone. We are still using the diaper covers as well, just in case.

Hope this helps.

My DS goes through stages, depending on growth and amount of liquids that day.
1. Huggies overnight is the bare minimum to keep him dry
2. Huggeis overnight with a diaper doubler, either cloth or disposable - disposable diaper doublers are with diapers at the supermarket, often on the top or bottom shelf, so you may need to hunt to find them.
3. Combo 2 with a cloth cover over the top - nothing gets through this.

You may also want to put him in fleece pajamas. The fleece wicks moisture away from the skin and will keep him feeling drier, even if he isn't.

You have to venture into the colorful and exciting world of cloth diapers to get a good waterproof cover...here's a decent one http://stacinator.com/sosimple.shtml just put it on over the disposable and it will keep errant pee from wicking out all over the bed (I prefer the wool ones, myself...I got one for a couple bucks used off ebay, so not too much out of pocket for the experiment). Or basically there are wool shorts you can just pull on...get 'longies' and they are his pajama bottoms, and don't have to be washed unless they start smelling or get poopy (easy hand wash with wool wash is fine).

Or just put polyester/polar fleece pajama bottoms on him, that's a lot like a lot of actual diaper covers..

Just some ideas (I vaguely remember having that child for a moment... he slept a LOOOONG time and had a wet bed in the morning... ah, that's a bittersweet memory..now he's 9!)

oh no!! don't use baby dry at night! they are HORRIBLE. use the cruisers at night!!! when dylan was born, the hospital used baby dry and he FLOODED his basinett ever time he peed! (he was in the NICU, but full term and 9.5lbs.)

my suggestions, other than to get rid of the baby dry, are to:
limit liquids after 5pm
go up a size in diaper
put a cloth diaper cover over it, a fleece cover might be best for ease of washing, etc.

We were a Cruisers-only family until they failed the nighttime pee at around your son's age. Now he's in Crusiers size 5 during the day (although we've started buying 6's on sale, we're using up our 5's stash) and he wears Huggies Supremes size 6 at night. Voila, no more soaking PJ's in the mornings.

You could also use a sposie doubler. I've seen them at BRU and our local grocery store in the diaper aisle. They come in a small package and are basically pads you lay in the dipe before you put it on DC. I think I'll have to do that for DD as she's also woken up wet several times lately.

I'd try Huggies Supreme. My son does leak out of them, but has leaked out of Baby Dry.

Also, can you put a pair of fleece pants on him? That should help keep things dry.

I too find huggies supreme more absorbant than pampers baby dry. They also seem to have more elastic to keep leaks in. You could also try Huggies overnight (they work for us and hold 1-2 night time feedings plus the first am feeding). Other suggestions, try sizing up, try a poise pad in the diaper, for awhile we were putting 2 diapers on but realized we needed to size up. Hope this helps. I know how much fun it is to change sheets every am!

As an aside, is it strange that my baby was out of size 5 cruisers at 9 months? He's in the 50th percentile for weight, and 70th for height, but he is quickly growing out of the huggies supreme in 5 too! Don't diapers switch to pullups after size 6?

We were having the same problem with my son at that age. We tried all the different brands and the only one that has consistently been leak proof is the Luvs brand. Which is great because it's cheaper, too! We also size up at night. My son can wear any brand size 5 during the day, but it has to be size 6 Luvs at night!

Hope that helps!

I used those and they really did work for us...no more soaked baby in the AM!

Maybe you're just used to diapers being huge on him? The tapes shouldn't overlap, they can even be several inches apart. I have a hard time with this myself, it seems like size 3's are quite small on my huge 8 month old, but really they fit fine, even for night. She can wear a 4 at night, but doesn't really have to, unless I put a doubler in. I know my other kids were average sized and wore size threes from like 5 months to well over a year old.

I wish that were the case! We're talking Cruisers--the tape is on bare skin, the fabric of the diaper doesn't cover the side of his thigh. I've even ripped some tabs off trying to get them to stretch so there is more diaper covering his thigh. Maybe he just has really big thighs, but I've seen bigger. So far he's 22 lbs. and only fits in size 4 huggies supreme, not huggies, cruisers or luvs. Oh, and huggies and luvs are too short now. He seems to need very premature sizing up as he's barely in the low end for 4's. I hope this isn't abnormal.

Update - we tried the Huggies Overnights last night - and we still leaked but not as bad as with the Pampers (but he slept 12.5 hours too).

Guess we'll try the Luvs tonight if I can get to the store today to buy some.

I'd really like to get away with just a diaper and not use a wrap / maxipad or whatever but we'll see how it goes.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Did you size up as well. Sometimes the combo of huggies overnights plus sizing up is what helps.

BillK

Well he's 27.5 pounds now - and wears a size 5 - that's what we got in the Huggies Overnights - Target didn't have any size larger than 5. :\

I just laughed out loud looking at your avatar pic! I live in South Hills of Pittsburgh, so I know what you are talking about, but I bet many people are confused! Cute idea!!

can you change him before you go to bed? my first DS couldn't be woken by a freight train driving through his bed once he has gone to sleep. we can take him potty at 11pm and he won't wake up. my friend used to just go in and put a new dipe on her DD before she (the mom) went to bed every night.
