We were getting changed for DS's swimming class and he told me he had to go potty. I really didn't think he would go as the times at home have been pure chance. But sure enough, as I'm balancing him over the toilet bowl, he peed. I asked him if he was all done and he said more and peed again. I was so surprised. We'll keep up PT at home, but what do I do about going potty in public. If he tells me he needs to go, I want to take him so we're consistent about using the toilet. He's so small he nearly fell into the toilet bowl. I've seen those fold up potty seats, are they any good? Should I keep a small potty in the car? Any other suggestions...
Thanks
Nicci

Hi Nicci,

I've just been taking DD to the regular bathroom wherever we happen to be & I put t.p. on the seat, sit her up there, and squat in front of her, holding her up under her armpits. Otherwise, like you said, she'd fall in!

I also did pick up a cheap $1 potty at a dollar store to keep in the car in case if emergency. DD has not wanted to use it on the few occasions that it has seemed necessary. She has been able to "hold it" until we got to a bathroom.

This is a toughie to figure out, I know!

With all my boys in public restrooms I would have them stand to pee. I have Nathan stand on my feet to make him a little taller then make sure he doesnt touch the toilet. I cant say that I ever remember any of my boys actually pooping in a public restroom.

Yes and Yes. We had a fold-up potty, and used it for probably 6 months, until DD was big enough and comfortable enough to sit on a big potty on her own. We also kept a little potty (Baby Bjorn for $10) in the back of the car for emergencies. We still use that, nearly a year after PT.

We have the potette (theecstore) and while it seems like it wouldn't work, Kaya loves to use it. It's nice because I just put in a plastic grocery bag, add a wipe to absorb the pee and she pees in it. We keep it in the trunk of our car for emergencies. Sometimes, even if a regular potty is available, she likes to use this one--I think she likes helping to set it up, LOL. In any case, she has peed in regular toilets by what PP have said--hold her by her torso and she pees in. I try to get her to lean forward so that she doesn't pee out, but of course, that's always easier if her feet have somewhere to go. DH has also held her over a urinal and she peed that way.

I'm not sure if you are teaching DS to stand when he pees, but maybe you could have him crouch on the seat and pee in? (Of course, I've never had experience with boys, so I don't know if this would work.)

I kept our Bjorn potty in the car for a few months when DD was potty training. Sometimes it's SO much easier to have them "try" while you are loading groceries etc, than stopping at every bathroom. It was also helpful for those "Mommy, I need to go potty NOW!" moments when there's no where to stop, or for us when we were driving through the bad part of town. I could just stop in a parking lot, lock the doors, and let her go potty, then buckle back in and empty the potty later.
