View Full Version : Rash - what do I do?

Sorry to ask before searching, but time is at a premium these days...

DS1 never had diaper rash, either in sposies or in CDs, and now DS2 is all rashy and I don't know what to do. It started when he was in sposies, and now that I switched him to CDs it's getting worse.

I'm slathering on the ointment at every diaper change, after making sure he's good and dry, and I've got him in either PFs or MEOS w/ a microfleece liner. Maybe he's reacting to the fleece?

He generally sleeps between feedings, and those were every 3 hours or so until the past few days, when he started to go longer between times. I was changing him at every feed, b/c I don't want to wake the sleeping baby, but maybe I should? I would give him some nekkie time in the sun, but we've been having some cold and miserable rainy days, so that's not an option...

Help!

Could it possibly be a yeast rash? What does the rash look like? Linnea had a diaper rash that was not horrible but no matter what I did, it just wouldn't go away. I finally figured out that it was yeast and just in time. It suddenly spread everywhere and became NASTY. Probiotics took care of it in no time once I figured out what to do. Yeast can take different forms so I didn't realize what it was at first. It looks like some sort of dermatitis.

What kind of ointment are you using? My DS2 was all rashy, too & DS1 wasn't, so I went through the same thing. I really had to experiment with different creams/ointments until I found what worked. For us, just plain Auquafor or Lansinoh worked the best for those stubborn rashes.

Also, I'd get rid of the fleece liner (plus not use a cover during the day) & just try to change him more often for a few days to see if that helps. I know that can be a tall order.

Another thing that helped was using a hairdryer on cold to dry-out the bum between changes.

Good luck! Sorry your little guy is uncomfortable.

It's still not pretty, but it seems to be on the mend.

It's been so cold and icky here that he hasn't really gotten to air out, but I have had him in a PF and wrapped in fleece blankets, which seems to help a little. What I wouldn't give for some warm sun!

I switched to Aveeno ointment, and that seems to be helping. I can use whatever ointment I want so long as I'm not using fleece, right? Because I've retired the fleece for the time being...

TMI - the rashy area that was red went blistery and is now peeling - that's recovery, right? Thankfully Riley doesn't seem to care...just so long as the milk keeps coming...

eta: did I just spot an updated siggie???

I think the peeling is a sign of recovery. One thing is that if you're doing probiotics for yourself, that will probably help if it's yeast, but if it's much worse, then you'll have to put the probiotics directly on him, or you could put some on your nipples when he nurses.

I have not used fleece yet with Mika and so far so good. But Kaya, who does tend to be rashy, didn't have a problem until maybe 3 months? That was when I discovered PUL over long periods of time (when she started going longer between changes) was not good for her.

I hope Riley gets better soon! FWIW, we had a gorgeous day a few days ago, but we've been having wet, cold, and cloudy days for the last few and it's driving me batty.

Glad Riley's feeling better. I was going to say that I think peeling is a sign of improvement. I'd send you some warm CO rays, if I could. :) Sending them telepathically now {{sunshine, sunshine, sunshine}}.

Did you get them?

Thanks for noticing my siggie. :)

We got lots of sunshine today after days of rainy overcast weather, so I'm going to send you some rays, P!

Hey, Allison, if you want to join us at Preggos, just give me a holler (pm). :)

I do hope your little one's bottom is better. If it's not, did you consider a possible allergy. DS couldn't wear disposables at all, no biggie as I CDed my older DKs. Even after ditching the disposables, he still had a constant rash. He was reated for yeast, 'cuz my ped thought that was the problem, but it did nothing. Trieal and error got me to the problem - milk allergy. He was highly allergic to anything dairy. Since he was BF, I simply cut all dairy products out of my diet (if you must do this, I suggest rice milk over soy milk for drinking and cereal - it's sweeter and has a nicer taste, IMO) and the rash finally cleared up. He did eventually outgrow the allergy and can now drink milk/eat any dairy products.
