It's been very cold here. The heater causes DS skin to be so dry that it cracks. We got a shower filter to make the water less chlorinated. Besides lotion, what else can I do to remedy the dry skin? Should I put oils in his bath? TIA.

What kind of soap are you using on him? How often do you bathe him? Bathing and soap are very drying for tender skin.

We started with Ivory and that didn't help. We're now using Dove moisture bar. I just got some Cetaphil for sensitive skin cleanser today. Will try that too...

The cetaphil is probably better, but truly, nothing is best. A little splashing in the bath every night or so is all the washing babies need (well, they do go through a 'gotta wash the food out of the hair everynight' phase, lol).

Have you tried a humidifier? I agree that bathing less often may help. We have always bathed DD once a week unless she gets super dirty in between. How much chlorine is in your water anyway? If its significant, I'd try buying gallons of water and bathing him in the sink or a small inflatable tub and see if it makes a difference. GL

I'd go to a bath every 3-4 days; it will help significantly compared to bathing him daily.

Yep, we do the once a week bathing too, definitely for the newborn, and during the winter, for the toddler. Even during the summer, if she didn't get that dirty, we didn't wash her that often. The nether regions can be cleaned daily, but the rest doesn't need it that often. Although she spent the summer playing in her wading pool. ;)

I second pp's suggestions of less frequent baths. A short, lukewarm bath can be hydrating though. We put Eucerin daily moisturizing lotion on right afterward, when skin is damp, and it is actually better than no bath for him. Humidifier might help too.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think we'll try bathing him less often. After reading the posts, I think the excessive drying may be due to when DH bathes DS. DH lets DS play in the water for 20 minutes or so. When I bathe DS, we're done in 5 minutes... Thanks again for your help.

I'd try a humidifier too... You don't even have to use it in his room to make a difference. Just use it somewhere he spends a lot of time (like in our house, that would be the living room) and it will affect the overall humidity. Plus, as everyone else said, fewer baths. :)

Try Aquaphor and Dove bar soap.
