TMI, so I'm putting in some dots here:

Going underwater apparently scares the sh!t out of DD. :P

Even though she's potty-trained, I've so far had TWO #2s in the swim diaper to clean up this year -- both at a public pool. Ick. The first was such a horrid mess (I had to call for the maintenance people to disinfect the bathroom), that I finally learned enough for the second one.

Okay, poop gets mushy when wet *really* fast. Barf. The trick to cleaning is to put the kid on top of the potty and then pull the swim diaper down while dumping everything into the potty as fast as possible. Don't try to take the diaper off first. D'oh!

Maybe all you smart mamas would have figured that out. I'm logic impaired ;), but have learned my lesson.

Happy swimming, everybody!

LOL - thanks Marisa! I wouldn't have thought before pulling the diaper off either. But I don't know if I can hold DD's tiny, wriggly bum on the toilet and pull off a gross diaper at the same time. I hope we don't have to deal with it this summer. :)

haven't had a poop in the pool experience yet, but I'm thankful to have read your PSA, believe me :) I'm sure my day will come!

Ummm, we just rip apart both sides (the elastic part) and take it off like a regular diaper...

I think, for the most part, this avoids the mess?

I assume you mean the disposable swim diapers? Yep, that would be the best practice then. Some cloth diapers have the side closures too.

We use the pull-on cloth diapers. Now I see the downside! ;)

As an infant/toddler Sarah pooped EVERY time we were at the pool. EVERY time. I never used the cloth swim diapers for this reason the disposables were so much easier. The water logged poop is soooooo not fun.

Yeah, this is one reason I like the bumpy swim diapers--because they have a side-snap. I think we got poop in her swim diaper once and it wasn't exactly fun, but it wasn't bad, either.
