View Full Version : (UPDATED) Night time help for PT'ing toddler...

Kaya has been day trained for almost a year now and we're sort of thinking of introducing her to night pottying--i.e. putting the potty in her room and letting her use it at night, first with our help, but eventually on her own. Regardless, we need something that she can pull down easily and pull back up. However, she has never had a dry diaper at night, partly because she knows she has the diaper on. What we would like to get her are some absorbent undies or pull-on diapers with a wool or nylong cover on the outside (also pull-on) so that she can just pull down the whole kit and caboodle easily. We have nylon pull-on covers and I have one wool pull-on cover (panda pants) that are great, but I could definitely use at least one more wool pull-on cover (esp. because Mika is using it right now!). But the other more difficult thing is we're trying to figure out what to do about the diapers. Does anyone know of non-waterproof pull-on diapers (i.e. pull-on fitted) that are reasonably absorbent? I have also considered using the nylon covers for Kaya and just putting a wool doubler in between the diaper and the cover just in case. But I still need the diaper.

So, ideas? Or if any WAHM makes something like that, feel free to spam me (Liza?).

Thanks!
Eileen

Eileen,

Since my ds *still* isn't using the potty, I am by no means writing as a mom with any experience!! However, while doing the GCDH, I stumbled on a new product by Starbunz--a trainer that looked really cool. I saw it on Pinstripes and Polka Dots (which I spent like a YEAR on trying to find that stupid icon). What sounded nice about this is that it is very stretchy *and* is stuffable if needed.

I saw that today when I was doing the ps&pd search (took quite a bit of doing, but it was fun--I had a much harder time with Princess Peapods), but didn't realize it had stretchy sides. That looks exactly what I'm looking for! I was going to go with the Snap-EZ cotton trainers, but this might be better, plus it's in stock and cheaper. Of course, it doesn't have cute prints and such, so Kaya might not go for it, but I can try at least. Her current favorite colors are red and light purple, so I could get the lavender ones and see what she thinks. :)

Thanks Susan--I never would have gone back and looked at it if you hadn't said something!

...oh dang! I can't use these for Kaya. :( They have a waterproof inner--I need it to be breathable! Why oh why can't she make them all cotton?

(Yeah, PS&PD about killed me in this hunt...) Anywho, where did you see that they had a waterproof inner. These intrigued me so that I read and read about them.

Have you tried Kaya overnight without a diaper? N was dry overnight before he was day-trained, but whenever he was in a diaper during the day, he'd use it.

Maybe a pad of some sort to absorb accidents without wrecking the sheets would work - fleece-topped hemp or similar?

Well, I believe the website says that, but I did a google search and read about it on the MDC board. There was a discussion about them and lots of people were saying they thought it was cool, but then a few replied, "Rats, I wish they didn't have the waterproof inner in there!" Apparently, their kids were like Kaya in that they needed a breathable option.

As for the hunt, my goal was to do all the extreme sites and I have managed that. I've done a few of the others, but I'm not really trying to get them all. It was just kind of fun to see if I could get the extreme sites. The anagram one was really cool, although I'm not really good at scrabble. But it was felt really neat to be able to decipher her anagram clues. I never would have found it on my own (by just clicking) since her site is huge.

No I haven't. Frankly, I'm not confident enough to proceed that way, although I don't know why I shouldn't be. When she puts her mind to something, she can usually do it. But I'm not convinced she's decided she's ready and her diapers are always soaked in the morning. And she's a heavy sleeper. But maybe I can try something like that. We did have a talk tonight about how if she wants night underwear, she needs to not pee in it and get up to use the potty and she said that did it mean she shouldn't pee in her diaper. So we're slowly introducing the concept and waiting for her to "own" it. I'm getting a potty for her room soon and will be trying the snap-ez cotton trainers. If they work, they'll be worth the $$.

Wasn't Liza making some kind of pull on fitteds at one time? Maybe something like that with a pull on wool cover? The Little Beetle wool soaker shorts are really nice. I have used them overnight on DD.

Tiny Birds organic sells wool underwear. How about some padded training pants (Hanna makes nice thick ones) with the wool underwear over? http://www.tinybirdsorganics.com/organiccotton/cloth-diapers.html

If you want to go straight to underwear/training pants, how about something like this from OneStepAhead? http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=6773&cmSource=Search
You may have to wash it every day but that probably wouldn't be too big a deal. Target also has one but it looks smaller.
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-3/qid=1179716049/ref=sr_1_3/601-8509062-5768944?ie=UTF8&asin=B0001YIB1A

Ds rarely wets so we just went with a zip on waterproof mattress pad underneath the sheets to protect the mattress from staining. Ideally I would like to get a wool mattress pad but those are $$!

Thanks Angie! That pull-on wool soaker really looks nice. I have one, Panda Pants, that I will be using, but I was thinking a second one would be very helpful. Do you know if they run small or large?

I do have a wool mattress cover, but it's for the crib and not for a bed. Amazingly, I got it on Freecycle, along with an organic crib mattress!

Good luck, Eileen! I think you (and I) would be pleasantly surprised if DDs went "cold turkey." If it weren't for the impending newborn, I'd be trying underwear at night for Jazzy. I admit I'm holding her back for nights because I just don't want to deal with cleaning up a bed, waking up to help her, etc. :( I'm sure you probably feel likewise with your already limited sleep.

DD wears underwear for naps and hasn't had an accident yet. I keep two layers of sheets and waterproof pads on the bed.

I'm looking forward to hearing how your nights go and will look for inspiration. :)

As far as a potty for her room goes, is there anyway Kaya can gain access to the real potty at night? We were using a floor potty for a while, but when DD went at night she would call for us to empty and clean the little potty and sometimes (eek!) she'd empty it herself. So we just encouraged the big potty... much easier!

It's hard to say. I only have one and it's a medium. Ruby has been wearing it from about 6 months old and I think she still get several more months out of it. She is 20 lbs. and a solid medium in most diapers.

Hmm...okay, for a night time, I'd probably go with large. Thanks!

Littleman started asking me for underwear at night several months ago- it surprised me, but I ran with it and let him try it. (After explaining several times that he needed to keep them dry, just like in daytime, which would mean he'd need to wake up if he needed to go potty). I put a soft, washable waterproof pad under him. He did surprisingly well- waking up dry a little more than half the time. Occasionally he'd wake at night for assistance, but not often. I was pleased- the waterproof pads made cleanup easy, and he was slowly improving. I had visions of being totally done with diapers (for him) before he was 3 1/2.

Unfortunately, that all changed and he started wetting every night. He also started wetting at naptime, which surprised me. I was having trouble keeping up with the laundry, so he's back in diapers for now. Our deal is that if he keeps the diaper dry three naps or nights in a row, he may sleep in underwear the next nap or night, and every time until he wets again. Then it's a diaper again, and we start over. I've told him it's just up to him- when he's ready and able to stay dry, we can get rid of the diapers, and I leave it at that.

But my point is that when he started asking for underwear, I didn't think he was ready- and he surprised me. Kaya might surprise you, too. I do highly recommend the waterproof pads- AND I have a plastic cover over the mattress.

Yeah, that's actually how we PT'd Kaya for the day at 2.5. She asked for underwear and basically went cold turkey and if she wet it, then we just put diapers back on. She caught on pretty quickly. So that's sort of what I'm hoping for with night times. The difference is that she's a heavy sleeper. But maybe with wool shorts on and a waterproof pad, it'll work out okay. Where do you get your waterproof pads.

We have three soft, waterproof pads that were given to me at my first baby shower. Until this, the only thing I ever used them for was nakey-butt time. Unfortunately I don't know where they came from- I think my stepmom bought them, so I could ask her. Frankly they look pretty basic- my guess would be someplace like Target, Wal-Mart or BRU.

. . . I searched Froogle for "waterproof pad baby" and found a variety of possibilities, though I can't tell if any of them are identical to what we already have. This looks basically like the same thing:

here is my idea:
a pull on velour pocket fitted, hemp stuffed. the stuffer could have a PUL layer on it (not on the diaper, but on the stuffin') to prevent flooding. if that was still too waterproof for her, you could try hemp only and gradually reduce the stuffin'. velour is cotton/poly 80/20. would that irritate?? i worry an all cotton would dissolve in a few washings.
OR, maybe the stuffer could have a layer of windpro OR the pocket could be velour inner (feel wet) and windpro outer (stay dry) but it would still pull on.

thoughts?

feel free to email me, use my work addy:

and fwiw, schuyler has been day trained for TWO years and he wears motherease bedwetter pants or an MOE night whatevers. (can't remember the name.) DH has this hideous habit of telling him he can wear underpants to bed becuase he has been dry (DH doesn't get up with him during the week to see how often he is wet!) and then he FLOODS the bed and wakes us up at 4am sobbing. i would say he wakes up wet at LEAST once a week on average.

some kids just need longer at night.

Thanks, Liza! I did e-mail you.

With Kaya, she can't have any PUL layer in it. Even her Bright Bots are too much for her to wear every day all day, even though she doesn't pee in them.

I think she's fine with fleece, though I haven't used it every day. And wool is great for her, as is hemp. I think velour and fleece is probably okay for her, though.

Ah! Okay, those look pretty basic. I actually have two (or three) of those ultimate crib sheets that I've been putting under Kaya's sheets, but maybe I should be putting them on top of her sheets so I don't have to change her sheets if she wets them--just pull up the crib sheet.... I'll have to think about this.

Yes, that's the appeal for me- only having to wash the waterproof pads is a big plus compared to always having to strip and remake the bed, and wash all those sheets!

I'll often have to wash the top sheet or blanket along with the pad, but it's easier to trade out just the top bedding rather than the whole shebang.

So, I finally got 3 of the Snap-EZ cotton trainers in 2T and they fit Kaya very well. They're not super snug, so I know she'll be able to fit them for a long time. I also got the Little Beetle wool pull-on that Angie recommended and they work fabulously, plus Kaya loves the ladybug on the front. They're not super snug on the legs, but they seem to work just fine.

We've used that system for the last 5 nights (tonight's the 6th night). She's also slept on her fleece blanket, just in case. I wake her up between 10 and 11 to pee and then she pees first thing in the morning. On night 3, I didn't wake her until about 11:15 (I woke her up at 11:15 the night before and she was fine), and she had wet it a fair bit, but no leaks!!! I put on a new trainer and cover (our backup is another wool pull-on--Panda Pants--that I usually use for Mika, but it fits Kaya as well) and she was wet in the morning again. But the other nights and morning she has been dry! So even though I do have to wake her once a night to pee, it's not too bad since I'm up anyway and it's worth it that I don't have to wash night time diapers for her!!!

Thanks for your input everyone! Even though Kaya's only had one night (though she wet it twice), it looks like this system will work very well for her and I can probably move her into regular sheets with a crib sheet below. Oh, and Marisa, she does have her Boon floor potty in her room, and I just empty it in the morning. It's a lot easier than taking her out of the room to pee--she doesn't wake up quite as fully and goes back to sleep very easily. But taking a page from your book, during the day, she pees in the big potty--we just keep the step stool next to the toilet. It's SOOOO much easier when she poops! :)

Way to go, Kaya AND Eileen!!

Just to clarify... are the trainers and covers you're using all "pull-up" style? Can/does Kaya take them off and put them on herself?

mudder17
06-20-2007, 10:19 PM
Thanks Marisa! The [link:snap-ez.com/CartCottonTrainers2T.html|Snap-EZ cotton trainers] have snaps on the side, so you can undo it in case of a poop (not really necessary in our case), but she can pull them up and down very easily. The [link:www.wildflowerdiapers.com/catalog.php?item=805&catid=102&ret=catalog.php%3Fcategory%3D102|Little Beetles wool cover] is a pull-up style cover. And yes, she can pull them up and down herself.
