Okay, this really isn't a butts questions, although related, but I *think* this is the best place for it...

Probably about 1/2 the time we give DS a bath, he poops in the bathtub. I now make sure he's pooped once that day before even attempting a bath, but even that hasn't worked all the time. I'm not sure what else to do. He really likes being in the bathtub and playing. I just had a thought that once I soap him up (which I usually do right away and then let him play for awhile), maybe I should put him in a swim diaper? At least any poop would be contained that way?

I've thought about attempting to show him the potty and have him try to go before the bath but a) I don't think he's anywhere near ready and b) I know peeing in the potty is much easier for kids than pooping anyway.

Any other suggestions? I could make sure to only give baths on days he's already pooped twice, but that doesn't always happen. Cleaning up DS, the bathtub, and all his bath toys is not fun!

Okay, not sure why this was moved here since it isn't really related to diapers at all! I realize that was in my question though. I really don't think this is a "butts" question, but maybe someone here can help?

Can you tell when he is trying to poop? My boys always to a bug eyed look on their face ( semi grunt push expression)
What I would do is keep his little potty by the tub and if he starts to get the look is scoop him out of the tub and sit him on the potty so the poop drops in. THEN make the happy you made a poop dance clap and cheer just make a super big deal his poop is in the potty. then continue the bath. Its probably the nice warm water that stimulates him. Hopefully he will start to associate pooping with the bathroom.
Even if you can only get part of the poop in the potty the first time or 2 I would still try to continue it. Then cross your fingers he will start letting you know before.

Thanks Jeana,

That sounds like a good idea. I just didn't know if it was way too soon to even try something like that (DS is very young for his age), but heck, it's worth a shot. I have to admit I'm not always paying total attention. I can totally see him, but he's in the bathtub playing and I'm usually in the bedroom (attached to the bathroom) putting clothes away or something (like playing on the computer). Probably not the best idea!

The other day was totally my fault. He signed "all done" and just then the phone rang and I told him I'd take him out in one minute. In that minute he pooped, so I guess he was trying to tell me and I didn't listen!

No hes not to young to start using the potty. My oldest was 26 months and was dry every day and at least 6 of 7 nights. It was just when he was ready ( with some gentle encouragement).

Yeah, but DS isn't dry at night (at all!), doesn't show any interest whatsoever, and can't talk to tell me when he needs to be changed. I did try anyway, but he has some sensory issues and doesn't like the feel of the potty. I tried taking him out of the bath yesterday (knew it was coming) and whether it was coming out of the bath so quickly or the feel of the potty or both, I don't think he knew other than to cry. Ah well. Back to the drawing board!
