View Full Version : Ian is here!

My baby boy Ian Frederick is here, born July 2! I went in for a regular checkup on his due date (June 30) and was told that I was low on amniotic fluid, so I was admitted that night to be induced. I spent the next day going through all the highlights of induction. When it was finally time to push, I was so angry and upset about the induction that I pushed Ian out in 2 hours...not bad for a first time mom under the effects of an epidural. Thank God for all those kegels and ab workouts. He weighed 8 pounds 13 ounces and was 21 inches long.

Unfortunately we hit a snag on our last day in the hospital...he has jaundice. But rather than keep him in the hospital or go in for daily treatments, the ped recommended a course of home phototherapy, which we're nearly done with. I cried for an hour after they strapped the device on him - a flat light panel that lies along the length of his entire back, connected to the light box by a four-foot plastic cable. We have to leave the panel on at all times, except for the daily nurse visit. We rearranged the nursery to have his crib, changing table, and rocker in a little square. But he's otherwise very healthy, and we're nursing like champs. He's back to his birth weight and loves to sleep. I can't wait to get a picture up - my husband took a great photo yesterday.

A silver lining in the jaundice cloud - the daily nurse visits are fantastic. They are all lactation specialists and have been great about answering my questions about feeding, diapering, swaddling, sleeping, etc. etc. I'd rather my baby not need the treatment, but the daily expert visits are worth gold.

Who knew that babies could be so, so cute :)

Welcome, Ian, and congratulations, Kelly! you sound in love. I'm sorry about the jaundice. I know how stressful that is. Our ped insisted on putting Abby in the hospital for lights, and I nearly died of anxiety and sadness, even though I got to be with her. NEVER again. I envy you the home lights, but definitely understand your readiness to be done with them!

GREAT news - just a few short hours after posting my message, the nurse called us and told us to unplug him! He's done with the treatment - bilirubin coming down and weight going up. We actually got to go to another room of the house! And he seems to be a bit more wakeful now. Ah, now I can finally see Ian's true personality :)

Congratulations! Welcome to baby Ian! And babies really ARE that cute. :D

Sorry about the jaundice. Many of us have been there. We stayed in hospital with the bili-blanket as well as the lights; it was pretty scary to see my new baby boy hooked up to all those contraptions. Especially those horrid little protective glasses they put on them! But he was fine and we were able to leave earlier than thought, which was wonderful. And congrats with the BFing. BFing helps with the jaundice too...Helps them clear the gunk out. (Stiiiiiiiiiinky! :D)

Soon this will all be a distant memory! Have fun forming new, precious ones! :D
