View Full Version : LLL - is it a good resource for babywearing?

I don't belong to LLL but do breastfeed. I am trying to learn how to wear my baby but am having a difficult time (see very recent post). Would they be able to help me and see what I am doing wrong? Maybe even show me different kinds of slings to try out IRL?

Thanks,
Jennifer

I've found that with LLL, it really varies by chapter. It's probably as good a shot as any, I know that my local LLL group has babywearers, but I don't think that they sold slings. I'd suggest finding a local chapter and contacting the leader - she can probably give you some direction, even if she can't help you specifically.

Call them and see! I know the only other person I've ever seen in my town wearing a wrap (a Didy, no less!) was our local LLL leader.

I went to LLL for the first time the other day, and there were a few moms wearing slings. But all the ones I saw were being worn incorrectly. Some of them made me cringe actually! But is worth a shot.

My LLL is a good source. Several of them wear slings and they have loaner slings and sell the Maya Wrap and videos on how to use it. Before I started going they had a meeting just on babywearing. Disappointed that I missed it.

At my LLL almost all the mamas wear slings. Contrary to Beth's experience they were all wearing them properly. SO I guess it just depends on where you are. My LLL doesn't have loaner slings (that I know of) but everyone is always swapping and trying eachothers slings. The most common I see are Maya, Zolo, Kozy, Rev. Jan and pouches.

Also, you should check out MDC's finding your tribes forum. I met a lot of really good friends IRL through there and almost all of them babywear. Here is the link http://www.mothering.com/discussions/forumdisplay.php?f=76

Check this site to see if there are any local babywearing teachers near you. The list is growing every day!

If that and LLL don't work out, you can see if there's an API group near you.

If you're anywhere near me on Long Island, or in Northern NJ, I'd be happy to help you in person.

I happen to be a LLL leader but that doesn't include training on babywearing, lol! The training on babywearing came from my babies! But I have tried lots of different things and seem to be able to help moms in person better than online or on the phone. My small 18 month old is a helpful model!

I also know several LLL leaders in suburban Maryland (Silver Spring area) who know tons about babywearing and they lead great groups too!

LMK if I can help at all.
best, Nicole

Actually, I live in North Central NJ (Basking Ridge). It is just south of Morristown which you may have heard of. That is a decent distance from Long Island though. I would love some in person help but wouldn't want to make it inconvenient for you.

I think at this point, I am going to try another kind of sling and see if it is easier. If I can't get a hang of it, then I might call on you.

Thanks for your offer.

Jennifer,
I know *exactly* where Basking Ridge is. My mother in law lives there, in the Society Hill condos. Heh. My parents are in Randolph, which is where I grew up.

I'm home visiting fairly frequently! Email me privately at [email protected] and we can exchange phone numbers. My sister in law lives in Gillette (just off Valley Rd.) and is a pretty accomplished babywearer, although my nephew (now 3) isn't cooperative anymore!

I saw that you're in NJ, I don't know how far you are from Doylestown, PA, but there's a class being held next weekend in Doylestown on babywearing!! It's only $10. I'm planning to go. If it's not too far of a hike for you, let me know and I'll send you the info.

Hmmm, I have to look it up myself but Doylestown may not be too far. What day/time is it? We are in the process of making plans but I'd like to squeeze this in.
