View Full Version : Best carrier/pouch for computing?

Hi all,

My wife and I recently adopted a baby boy and I'd like some advice on a carrier from the experts.

He was born on 2/12 and he's approximately 10 pounds and 21" long now. My wife has a Baby Bjorn that she seems content with but she's been after me to get some sort of carrier of my own - rather than readjusting hers all the time. I'm not so sure I'm wild about the Baby Bjorn personally.

It seems after researching these forums that a pouch may be the best bet for me - but I'd like some suggestions. I'm about 5'-11" and 180 pounds - I frequently work from home and I'm on the computer a good bit as a result.

What I'm looking for is a front carrier that will allow me to have our son close to me while I do some computer work - so I guess my arms/hands need to be somewhat free - and I'd imagine he needs to somewhat high (or low?) to make that work.

Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Hi Bill,

Have you looked at Hotslings? www.hotlsings.com I actually don't have one of these (yet) - I do have a KKAFP http://www.kangarookorner.com/k_shop_pouches_custom.shtml which I really like - but it does get a bit warm since it's fleece.

I have hard really great things about Hotslings - as far as a pouch - they seem to be very popular. Check out some reviews http://www.thebabywearer.com/cgi-bin/reviews/reviews2.pl?folder=hotslings&category=Pouch

Although - I have tried to hold my baby in a carrier and on my lap - even with toys in from of us whil on thecomputer - and he is never happy for more than a few minutes! (He does love playing with the keyboard...he wants to type too! But your DS has awhile to go before he gets to that stage.)

If you find a trick that works for you - PLEASE post it - I'll try it with mt DS.

Good luck!

I haven't seen this one mentioned here in awhile, but it is a "Bjorn-like" carrier that is supposed to provide much better support and be much more comfortable:

http://www.wilkinet.co.uk/BabyCarriers.asp

Also, a wrap carrier may work well for your situation. Check out this site for lots of info about various style wraps and a discussion of pros and cons:

And there are also the Asian Baby Carrier style wraps (sort of similar to the Wilkinet actually) like the Mei Tai and and the Sutemi. You can see MeiTais at the above sight.

It's not a pouch, but what about an Ergo? They have an infant insert sold separately. Also, it will be good to use as your son gets bigger/older for both front and back carries. Congratulations on your son!

I find the Ergo pretty darned uncomfortable for sitting due to the stiff, padded hip belt. I suppose it depends on how it hits your particular body type, but I definitely don't recommend the Ergo if your primary interest is in sitting. However, it is awesome for front and back carries while walking and standing.

Hi all - thanks for the replies! After doing some more research and talking to some friends - I've decided to try our a pouch from New Native Baby - http://www.newnativebaby.com/productmain.html

I think my wife may order a Hot Sling for herself as well - based upon the reviews in that prior link. Once Zach is a lil bit older I think I might also get a Ergo - it seems really slick.

The New Native pouch should be here in a day or two and once I have some time to try it out - I'll be sure to post my opinion.

Thanks again!
