I have a maya style sling and have loved it so far. Now that dd is older and heavier and mostly sitting in the hip carry position I am was wondering if a padded sling would be better. I am concerned the backs of her thighs may be uncomfy in the sling since it's a bit tight there in this position.
Also it is going to be summer soon, would I be better off without the padding in the summer?

It's really personal preference. Does your dd seem uncomfortable? If not, I wouldn't worry.

I used my Maya Wrap most of last summer and my ds was fine. We did tummy to tummy and hip carry mostly. I love the breathability of the fabric.

Depending the type of fabric (mayas are pretty soft) the leg padding may not be a big deal for hip carries. Just watch for red marks-if none then you're fine. A padded leg rail is alway nice but many feel that it's harder to adjust a padded ring sling. If you can find a lightly padded one then it shouldn't be any hotter.
A Hotslings with padded leg rail is another option. I love mine and so do lots of others!
