When can I start using the ergo without the infant insert?

Hi- I have been using a pouch with my now 8 wk old dd and plan on buying the ergo to use also. When can I start using the ergo without the infant insert? (meaning how old does db have to be?) I don't want to purchase the insert as well.

According to the mfr, you should use the insert until they can support their own head. I think they said 3 or 4 months (I don't have the info in front of me).

As for being worth the money - I think you could get the material to make it for really cheap, but the time it would take me (or my wife), when considering the dollar-value of my time, is worth more than $25. I imagine that we will use the insert even a little while after she can sit in the ergo - it is a nice way for the kid to lie down.
