These would be my features for a perfect diaper bag:
1. Color goes well with most of my wardrobe
2. Stylish and Hip
3. Outside pockets for quick essentials
3. Inside cell phone pocket
4. Pockets inside for my stuff
5. Bottle pockets if still bottle feeding
6. Washable or at least cleanable changing pad, not too heavy
7. Bag stays on shoulder
8. Bag not to heavy (unlike every Coach bag I have tried)
9. Cleanable outside as well
I found the Petunia Picklebottom Toddler bag and the Kate Spade Messenger (medium size) to work well for me.

For me , the features that I want in a diaper bag are:

- not too big, not too small
- outside pocket that zips closed but holds a pack of wipes
- outside pockets that hold toys that are easy to get into
- able to be carried as a backpack or a shoulder bag or with handles
- inside pockets to organize things
- not heavy
- fits in my stroller basket or hangs on handles
- able to see all the way to the bottom when it is open so I can root around in there and find things. (a big opening on top)
- closes securely with a zipper so it doesn't dump if it turns upside down
- no bunny prints or disney characters or anything else cutesy

I couldn't have known what I wanted before I actually started using one. I suggest that people start out with the free bags from the hospital until they figure out how they really use one and then they will know what they want. I have a closet full of diaper bags I bought and never used or used once.

I use a Kelty Kids diaper backpack.
