I am thinking of getting a backpack style bag, but am wondering if it's inconvenient to not be able to reach into the bag and get something out?

That's the only problem I have with backpacks. Have you considered a messenger style bag? You would still be able to be hands free, yet be able to easily access the bag.
Also, One Step Ahead makes a really neat looking sling/backpack... http://www.onestepahead.com/jump.jsp?itemID=580&itemType=PRODUCT&lGen=detail&iMainCat=117&iSubCat=27211&iProductID=580&change=117
Otherwise I think a regular back pack is best for long day trips, esp. to amusement parks and malls, where you'll be walking a lot.
As for totes, I know that the ISM woman said something about adjusting strap length on her backpack/tote so that you can wear it messenger style. If you do a search you may be able to find out the specifics on that, I just can't remember.
