I'm a new user and first-time mom-to-be - I had no idea there were so many diaper bag options to choose from!
Anyway, I live in the city and am pretty sure I want to use a backpack version so I have my hands free. What kinds would you recommend, and what features do you find essential?
Oh, and of course I'd like something stylish! I looked at the Lands End and Eddie Bauer bags recommended by BB, and I'm sure they're good quality, but they're pretty boring.
Thanks for any help!

My advice would be to get in on the Whimsical Wears co-op that's almost over and order one of Kim's backpacks (I think they are $65). You can choose from any fabric and specify exactly what options you want on the bag. Just do a search for "Whimsical Wears Co-op" and that should take you to the details.
Or, if that's too many options, you can go with an Ella bag (www.ella-bags.com) or an I'm Still Me (www.imstillme.com). Both offer backpacks in a wide variety of fabrics and they are very good quality.
I have an Ella backpack that I absolutely love. It has metal feet on bottom, a magnetic snap closure, 6 elasticized pockets on the inside, plus a key clip so I don't have to dig for my keys. I ordered it before the WW co-op, or I probably would've ordered one from that instead. (Heck, I thought about ordering another one!)
There are also Petunia Pickle Bottom backpacks, which are gorgeous (and definitely on my wish list), but they are a little pricier.
My DH has the Land's End backpack and, while it's great for organization and holds a lot of stuff, like you said, it's boring. :)
Here are pics of my backpack, if you're interested.
