View Full Version : Justifying diaper bag purchases

Question: Is it safe to say that once you have a baby and have to carry a diaper bag, you don't really carry a purse much anymore? Or you try not to? Because if this is the case, then it sounds like a good way to justify multiple diaper bag purchases right?

Dh thought $50 was a lot for a diaper bag (re: to my new Skip Hop). But when I told him that 2 of my friends have Coach diaper bags, one has a Louis Vuitton diaper bag, and another was asking for a Kate Spade---all several hundred dollars, he said, well when you put it that way, $50 sounds like a bargain. Little does he know that in my head I am thinking, well, I will eventually spend the same amount as my friends but I'll just have a variety of bags. }( LOL. Still a good deal if you ask me.

Can you tell I am bored and just waiting around for this baby to come already? :D

The only time I carry a regular purse is when I'm at work or when DH and I are on a (very rare) date with just the two of us. Otherwise, I'm carrying a diaper bag only...no purse.

I used to buy purses like I bought shoes...one in every color, to match every outfit. I haven't bought a purse since well before Avery arrived and don't really plan to buy another one (except for the occasional wristlet that matches my dipe bag!). So diaper bags are my new fashion accessory and I am slowly accumulating one in every color, to match every outfit! lol

Probably depends upon the person, i've always carried a seperate purse, and some people never own a "diaper bag" they just use a bag of some sort or combine a purse/bag.

My ever growing number of diaper bags has alot do to with the changing needs, as more kids get added, kids get older etc...sometimes better thing come along too ;)

Ever since I discovered the wonderful world of diaper bags, I've only bought one real purse, and that was $10 from Target. :) Before, I used to buy tons of nice purses. I've actually sold most of them to fund diaper bags.

Now, I just use a diaper bag and a matching wrist bag or clutch. The only time I carry a purse is like Robyn said, on the occasional date night. I'm a stay at home mom though, so I think if I was still working, the situation may be different.

I like the way you think though, why spend hundreds of dollars on one fancy diaper bag, when you can have a nice collection for the same price? Much more functional in my opinion!

What color Skip Hop are you getting?

I got a black Skip Hop. Boring I know. But my stroller is black and black toile so I figured it would match best. Plus I thought maybe DH wouldn't mind it so much if he needed to use it. I kind of wish I got a cute color. I love pink or blue. But I figure I'll save the colors for the other fun bags. I'm getting a mint Kecci and I think I might want one of the new dynamite roll PPB bags. I am also thinking about either a Mothership or Alpha 7. I want to see the Alpha 7 IRL though. And I want to wait to see what kind of packer I am before I spend the money. Plus I am waiting on the co-op that is supposed to start on the baby bags group. :)

I always carry a separate purse because I work part-time and hate repacking all the time - I tend to forget things that way.

I have a separate purse that fits in the front pocket of the Skip*Hop. It has a tiny wallet and tiny make-up bag in there. I got that for when I'm not with Jonah. I can just grab it and go. Plus when I go back to work I don't want to un-pack and re-pack. I figured that I can just throw it in the diaper bag when I take the baby out.

By the way, that is exactly the way I think as far as a lot of diaper bags for the price of one. I first started out wanting a Coach bag. Then I came to these boards and met other moms like me who bought shoes and purses before babies, and I have a new obsession. I feel like I still do the girlie thing by buying diaper bags that are cute, but I also do the functional thing too. And by not buying the "really expensive" one I can get a few. My next one will be a MS.
