DH gave a co-worker a gift already, but we are actually heading to a shower for her and I want to put together a small basket or bag and make a dinner she can freeze. I was thinking it would be fun to put the things that are handy in a diaper bag, but you might not think of as a new mom. Some thoughts I have been given were (not that I am neccessarily giving these, still needing ideas here ;-)):

Glad Press n Seal Wrap (for changing tables when you are out)
Ziploc baggies
Travel size Purel
Huggies disposable changing pads
Sunscreen stick
Stroll'r Swivels

What else do you use, but a new mom might not think of???

a little cosmetic bag with tiny bandaids, regular bandaids, neosporin, nail file & gas drops. Basically a baby first aid bag. I can't tell you how many times I've used this and I only have a 3 month old. HTH

Little baggies to put used diapers in (pet supply stores carry lots of these)
Disposible bibs
A paci washer
Hyland's teething tablets (she will thank you later)
Shout wipes (stain remover wipes)

All super suggestions! Also add Bacitracin Wipes..i've got 2 wipes in each diaper bag! I love things in "wipe" form. I've seen sunscreen wipes, OFF Wipes, etc.

Definitely those blue plastic little baggies for dirty diapers. I use those now instead of the Diaper Champ! Love 'em!

A mom I used to work with gave me a similar "kit" when I had Ava. One of the things in there was a box of Pampers disposable bibs. I love these and use them all the time. Other stuff she included has already been mentioned, but I second the recs for... hand-sanitizer, sunscreen stick, diaper disposal bags, and disposable changing pads.

Another mom gave me Lansinoh ointment and some great super-thin disposable nursing pads (also Lansinoh I think). I really appreciated those!

A little bag to fit inside the diaper bag for Mom (being a new mom that is your very last priority) with some things like Chap Stick, Tylenol (for Mom) some mints or the gum you can use to "brush your teeth",a tiny comb or brush, a hair band or elastic if she has long hair, shout wipes etc.. and include a note to put in an extra set of car&house keys for emergencies!

Great ideas!

I'd also add:
- extra burp cloths (you never know just how many you'll need until you run out!)
- Mom Stuff: snacks, pretty lip gloss, hand lotion, Lansinoh, Tylenol/Excedrin Migraine (my savior), nail file, pads (for those lovely post-partum days)...
- Disposable camera (you never seem to have one when you want one!)
- Mix CD of some happy/relaxing tunes
- Pack of the new Huggies Wipes dispenser, with the pop-up feature...too cool
- Diaper sacks
- "Rash Stick" it's a diaper rash cream in a deodorant-type dispenser. Great for diaper changes on the go because you don't get your hands messy!
- $2-3 in change...in case you want to get a drink or something from a vending machine

I hope she loves the gift, you're so thoughtful!

Someone gave me a pair of plastic tongs for washing bottles and I've used them everyday for the past 8 months ever since the baby was born!

The only thing I'd add to these great suggestions is a container to hold formula powder if she isn't breast feeding. Baby stores carry ones that have four sections and you can pour out what you need for the bottle. I usually put formula in two sectons and cereal in the other two. Then you just carry the baby bottles with the water in them. I don't know what I would have done wothout this on the go.

Have fun. It's a great gift!

I LOVE doing baby shower baskets! I will vary my ingredients but this is usually my main list from which I'll pick and choose (Gets expensive to do them all):

Mylicon for gas
Mustela facial cleansing cloths
Burt's Bees (Baby Bee) gift set is nice - especially the diaper cream
Saline drops for stuffy noses
Yankee Candle in the baby powder scent
A copy of the Baby Bargains book :)
A copy of The Happiest Baby on the Block
Robeez
Pacifiers (if she's using them)
A personalized (if you know the name) SisterSong CD
Baby Mozart
Receiving blanket\hand-made blanket - I do rag quilts for friends
Halo sleep sack
Woozit toy
A set of maracas for little ones (serves as a nice rattle)
Infant Tylenol
Digital thermometer
Nasal aspirator
Plastic links
Burp\spit up bibs
Hanna Anderssen pilot cap
Hanna Anderssen zip up outfit (the super soft thick cotton ones) & amtching socks that stay on

ETA: I know all of this doesn't necessarily fit into what might be in a diaper bag, but thought I'd throw out some ideas for you anyway:)
